    Changing oil

I use one like this, through the engine's dipstick tube: https://www.amazon.com/DasMarine-Extractor-Scavenge-Transfer-Suction/dp/B07DCPMP4S/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=oil+change+pump+12v&qid=1574598901&sr=8-3 Make sure the oil is warm to make it easy to pump.

Where to Find Bronze Verticle Stanchions for an 82 GB

The bronze GB stanchions from that era were fabricated, not cast. As such you might be able to have your damaged ones repaired.

    Battery Help Please

If you get the "click click click" I would think the problem is low power from the battery rather than an issue with the solenoid. Besides issues with the battery itself, you should check that all cable connections are clean and tight.

How well do solar panels work in the Pacific NW

When I installed 1kW of solar panels I also switched my electric stove and oven to propane. Now I seldom need to run the generator. :-) Heating domestic water has not being a problem but I only cruise in the summer and usually change anchorages every couple of days and, thus, heat the...

Mounting solar panels on canvas dodger

Last year I needed to replace the canvas of my Bimini top and was quoted €900 for the work. Instead I bought 3 330W rigid panels for €200 each and mounted them directly onto to the Bimini top frame, which I reinforced. Each panel is 1m by 2m by 35mm thick. Now I seldom need to use the genny...

    getting 80 pound dog aboard

I have been getting my various Labs in-and-out of my trawlers over the years. I use a passerelle to get them on-and-off the the boat from the dock. This often needs a bit of coaxing. To get them down to the swim platform In my previous boat, a Grand Banks 42 CL, I built two light platforms...

    Old Onan Generator problems

The starter not working could well be due to a faulty solenoid. The plunger could be stuck, for example. (This happened to me this summer and I was able to free it by moving with my hand and lubriucating with a penetrating oil.) The engine not starting could be due to various reasons. If it...

    Need windshield wiper input

Sorry, can't help you with your query but, if you are not able to get the arm you might consider not using wipers at all and just use Rain-X which is what I do.

    Adding inverter

If it doesn't cost too much extra, having the charging function in the inverter is a plus as you can run it in parallel to your current charger and charge your batteries that much faster off the genny.

Engine choice on Grand Banks 42

I find "cruising speed" has as much to do with the choices the helmsman makes as with the boat and the motor in question. I had a Grand Banks 42 with twin 120 hp Lehman-Fords which I tended to run at 1600 RPM achieving 8.5 knots. WOT achieved 11 knots. Over time, though, I realised how fuel...

    Towing a 13' whaler or 10 RIB

We tie-up our 13' Whaler to the mother ship with forward-leading and backward-leading springs attached to the bow rail of the dink. By pulling from the corner rather than the center of the bow the Whaler seems to separate more from the mother boat. We also use a stern line attached to the...

    Towing a 13' whaler or 10 RIB

We also tow a 13' Whaler, with a 40 hp motor. We tow it on an nylon bridle and a 5/8" polypropylene line 75' long. We have had no issues towing it although we nave not experienced this in challenging weather. For anchoring and tying side-to a dock we tie up the Whaler "on the hip" as shown in...

    Grand Banks Classic Davits

What tender do you in mind? How heavy is it? I had a heavy tender (ca 400 lbs.) on my Grand Banks 42 Classic and I installed a Nick Jackson pipe davit to carry the tender on top of the aft cabin. It worked well.

Why do I see so little discussion about jet drive tenders?

The jet casing and nozzle of my Avon Seasport are aluminum so it I try to limit the time it spends in the water. The RIB itself is not anti-fouled so that is another reason to avoid long spells in the water. The jet does have sacrificial anodes so a month or two per summer has not been a...

Why do I see so little discussion about jet drive tenders?

Like everything a jet RIB has its pros and cons as a tender. I bought a second-hand Avon Seasport 320 12 years ago or so and I still have it. It is 10' long, weighs 550 lbs. and packs an 80 hp 2-stroke Yamaha engine and jet drive. At the time I wanted a dinghy that could also be used to take...

    Cruising On One Engine

I stand corrected. I did not see the forest for the trees, being convinced that running on one engine was more efficient. So the Dreamer data actually confirms it is more efficient to run two engines. This is probably because of the factors discussed in the thread such as the drag of the prop...

    Cruising On One Engine

You are right. One needs to do the comparisons at a given speed and not a given RPM. In the graph below one can compare one versus two engines at different speeds. (For one engine I averaged the speeds and consumptions of the port and starboard results.) The data is not perfect but I think it...

    Cruising On One Engine

Here is the data from the Dreamer sea trials that has been referred to before in this thread: Dreamer Dreamer is a 1970s Alaskan 45 with twin Ammarine 404 engines which are John Deere 6404D engines and Velvet Drive transmissions 2.1:1. The tests were carried out by Bob Lowe, the owner of...

    Two Battery Chargers

It is what I do. When I added an inverter-charger I kept my older charger. On the hook I will run my 14 Kw Onan which has plenty of power for the two chargers working in parallel on the house batteries.

Swim step bumper solution for dingy protection

I had a similar problem to the OP's: the lip of the swim platform would catch the rubbing strake of the RIB. This would happen during boarding/un-boarding or simply when the dink was tied up at anchorage. Every couple of seasons I would need to re-glue the strake in place, not an easy chore...

    Towing Hard-shell Dinghy

I have towed hard shelled dinghies across the Mediterranean with no issues. Ribs are easier to dock with. Just tie them to the bow on a short line and back into the slip. When I use my 13’ Boston Whaler (best dinghy I have used) I need to have a crew member dock it before we dock the mother ship.
