French singer and film actor Tino Rossi was born April 19, 1907 in Ajaccio, on the French-ruled island of Corsica. He was nicknamed the "Napoleon of records" (He is said to be the second-most famous person to come from Corsica after Napoleon), the "Nightingale of the century" or "Emperor of romance". Mr. Rossi who recorded 2,000 songs, was the best seller of French records of all time with 400 million records sold, one of the best selling artists of all time.
Gifted with a voice well suited for opera, as a young man he left Corsica for Marseille where he made his first record in 1933 then achieved enormous success. The next year he went to Paris and began performing at the Casino de Paris. In 1938, Mr. Rossi toured the United States after his ''Vieni, Vieni'' stayed at the top of the American record charts for 28 weeks.
In 1955 he starred in the operetta Méditerranée, and in the following years he continued performing around France and the world. At the age of 75 Rossi gave a three-month-long stint of farewell concerts in Paris. He was inducted into the French Legion of Honor in 1982 by President Francois Mitterrand. He died September 26, 1983 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, Hauts-de-Seine, Paris.
The front cover of one of his vinyl disk shows a Grand Banks 36' anchored in a calanque of Corsica, one of my favourite islands.
He had quite the career, Pilou. Had to look up Vieni Vieni. Thought I’d heard it before and it turns out it was the song playing in the background in “It’s a Wonderful Life” while George is praying in Martini’s bar.

If you hadn’t heard these guys before, you might not bother to hit the play button. A most ambitious song from a couple of improbable-looking musicians.
Josh Turner, he’s great. Look at post 1181 and 1183 for a couple more of his songs. He often works with other young folks who appreciate good music. Oh wait, you did 1181.
Here he is with Allison Young doing Crazy. If you don’t fall in love with Allison Young, there is something wrong with you.

Thanks Ian. It has to come from loving what you do, making music. And here’s a somewhat recent live performance, Bruce. Not too shabby for a bunch of old guys.
