I'm from the lock the shaft camp also...whenever a USCG cutter lost an engine/motor...they locked the shaft too because of drag (maybe tranny too...but every engineer agreed the drag burned a lot of extra fuel)
How must I checkout from the States?
When I arrive in the States, the customs attach to my Passport a little withe piece of paper thats the air company got when we depart.
Must I deliver this paper to the customs?
I don't think anyone cares if you leave...In most cases this is correct, when you leave by boat. The arrival country is where the problem is. Once you get out of North America most counties require a zarpe or a copy (s) of your check out paper work and crew lists (with a minimum of 6 months remaining on everyones passports) before they will allow you to land. As US citizens, countries such as Brazil, NZ, OZ and some others require that you have a valid VISA in addition to a zarpe prior to your arrival.
Question: Lightning Rod. Is it important ? I don't see in other boats but a friend of mine got a lightning and burned all of his electronics.
Attched is an aticle on freewheeling vs locked shaft that says, "lock the shaft". Body

Greetings,
Crossing the Gulf Stream in a 20 kt. north wind? This is going to be an interesting thread. Take GREAT care Mr. Sergio. We don't want to read that you didn't end up in RIO.
I did almost the same trip in 2000. Gulf Coast to 100 nm off from Macae, Brazil. Non stop, but slow 80 to 90 nm days. The rig is a dynamically positioned vessel using (6) 5,000 hp electric thrusters to hold position, but we used the services of a tug for this re-positioning of the rig. This is the Noble Paul Wolff, I served on from the 1999 shipyard refit to 2002 off shore Brazil drilling for Petrobras.
What nice calm water. But no land in the background? But I guess that dosent mater kinda like southern California seas in the summer time flat, placid, serene, huh?
About 200 miles north of Suriname, ballasted for transit as you can see the thruster caps sticking up above the lower hulls.
Hurricane country!
No hurricanes in any time of the year. Just hot and humid with big bugs.
