Yanmar 6LPA/dtp Parts Engine for Sale $4500

I am by means an expert on this matter and some have different opinions as to the actual rules but this is what I understand. The EPA wants new engine purchases to comply with the current Tier(emissions) requirements. So, if I buy a new engine for an old boat it is supposed to comply with the...

Yanmar 6LPA/dtp Parts Engine for Sale $4500

Replacing my engine with a Yanmar 6LP. The 6LPA is 18 years old and has about 2600 hours. The block has been rendered unusable per the EPA so that I could get a waiver to replace with the 6LP. This engine is already out of the boat. This engine developed a pin hole leak in the crank case due...

    Starlink Gen 3 Mounting options

no big deal. I just opt in to the High Priority Data before I leave the dock and it works as advertised offshore.

    Starlink Gen 3 Mounting options

Well my experience was that I was 70 nm offshore and SL would not connect because I only had the Regional ($150) plan and had not switched on the HP switch before leaving the dock. I was not able to access the HP switch on the app because my phone could not connect from 70 nm offshore. Perhaps...

    Starlink Gen 3 Mounting options

I think the issue is once you leave 'cell phone range' or the 'zone.' You can access the High Priority Mobile Data switch on the SL app as long as you have an internet connection. If you have already travelled outside of the 'zone' then you won't be able to.

    Starlink Gen 3 Mounting options

I viewed a bunch of YouTube videos before purchasing my SL. Based on the info I garnered from one of the YT reviewers I purchased the Standard Dish instead of the High Performance dish. I received the Gen 4 dish. The reviewer's opinion was that the $500 dish was more than adequate versus the...

    AIS Pros & Cons?

I think AIS is better than radar for finding the fleet. Ha, what a great tool if you know what you're looking for.

    East coast to Ak?

Not trawling here but I think he meant going north or south from Alaska not north as in the NW passage. I know of only one yacht (ship) that made most of the NW Passage and she was a 300 footer. That would work for me. Ha

    Are lighthouses still useful?

I think that they are still very useful and important. Let's keep in mind that they were not originally built for the cruising public but for commercial ships. It would not be prudent to approach a headland using just one navigation tool when there are others available. For instance, a...

    Tensioner Pulley Seized

My boat has a substantial wash down pump with a 1-1/2" hose; I have to check the flow rate but it pumps a ton of water. I have been thinking of using it to get me home the next time the impeller fails. I was looking for a way to connect it to the raw water system and found that Groco makes two...

    Tensioner Pulley Seized

p.s. the Scania will also derate for other reasons. I had been ignoring a voltage alarm in my first season until the computer went into derate mode. Its a great feature since it protects the engine but it took some investigating to figure out what the problem was.

    Tensioner Pulley Seized

I have the same engine, DI13, in a Flowers 38, which is a downeast design. Have you found any broken screws in the bilge? Last year and this season I found a sheared bolt head in the bilge. Both bolts attached the after cooler to the engine; one was forward the second one aft. Are you using...

    Tensioner Pulley Seized

I had the unfortunate experience of the tensioner pulley on my new engine seizing, which threw the belt and therefore the raw water pump stopped. It doesn't take long for the coolant temp to sky rocket but fortunately I was standing at the helm and saw the temp spike. Yes I had an alarm but I...

    Upgrading/changing to electronic controls

the Glendinning back up was several thousands but I believe less than $5000

    Upgrading/changing to electronic controls

I have Glendinning on my new boat with two control stations. The second station is in the cockpit and is usually covered by canvas. The controls worked great throughout the first season but the day I was moving the boat for haul out the cockpit control failed. If one fails everything fails...

Physics question - which line method is stronger?

The first thing I thought of would be chafe factor but I don't see any comments about that. The line on the left would constantly wear on the pile. What would be the point of having two points coming back to the boat if the line between the pints fails due to friction/chafe?

    Power Management

thanks for all of the replies I think we have a workable plan going forward: 1. either add two more group 31 batts in parallel or replace the existing 31's with four x 6 volt golf cart batteries. 2. replace the 60 amp, 4 bank, 12v charger with a 50 amp, 24v charger 3. either use the existing 4...

    Power Management

How is the ACR working? Is it automatically charging either the house or the engine batteries off of the alternator or both? How should that crossover switch be used?

    Power Management

thanks for the reply. My initial thought was to use the existing 4 bank, 60 amp charger for just the house batteries but then I saw the quoted limitations on max charging. Your comment makes sense since most of the chargers are 'smart' like the one I have and stop charging when a battery is...

    Power Management

I'm still learning about my new boat but I have power management issues. The boat was built with a 24vdc system owing to the type of engine, Scania. The builder provided me with 2 x 8D batteries for starting and 2 x 31 series for the house. He also provided me with one 60 amp, Minn Kota...

RADAR - manual or auto tune? Chart overlay?

Time for a Sea Story: In today's age I would simply use the auto tune, especially if you have several watch standers. Back in the day when I working freighters we ran hard aground on a reef at 22 kts in clear weather. I wasn't on watch. Every time I took the watch I would turn the gain and...

    first time in fog

Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead (all be it at 8kts). My guess is that you would have had just as much agita from turning around as going ahead. Best to get used to working your radar and gps in favorable conditions so that you're more comfortable when the weather closes in. You can't...
