    Marine Insurance

Since you are in SD you might want to give Beth a call at Douglas K. Smith Marine Insurance in Pt. Loma. They got me a pretty good policy for my boat and Beth is really responsive. bchavet@dksmarineinsurance.com

    West Marine Aquired

Well, the new CEO will have his/her work cut out for them. One thing I think you need to keep in mind is you need a formula which is flexible in terms of stocking to match the area. I suspect they do that to some extent, but likely it needs to be stepped up. For example: I go to two stores...

    Happiness, Happiness, Happiness and Family

B&B, I just revisited this thread after reading the first few posts which I found quite heartwarming. And then a troll crept in... Anyway, my wife and I just celebrated our 30th anniversary last week. Here is a picture from our wedding day, a wonderful sunny San Diego day in April 1991. I...

    West Marine Aquired

Just curious, for those of you who are commenting on West Marine and them not going the right direction, what would you do if you woke up tomorrow morning and were CEO of WM? What changes would you make? Maybe the PE company will read this thread and take notice (probably not but I still...

    anchor

A quick look online it appears the SARCA Excel isn't very available in the states. Does anyone have a source for them in the US?

Yacht transport ship in trouble off Norway

The spectacle of the green tug going over the side would have been very interesting to see. Too bad no one was videoing it. It's great to see this didn't end up as a pollution disaster off Norway, kudos to SMIT.....again.

    New purchase Volvo

I don’t know how many of you follow Sailing La Vagabond but I’ve been very surprised how many issues they’ve had with their twin Volvo saildrives. The boat is only a few years old and they’ve had engine issues from day one.

What would you do about this

Try using a hacksaw blade and cut from the inside down to the thread to relieve the rust induced radial stress. A torch may be needed as well. Wind it out and JB weld in a new fitting.

Water pump GPM and brands question/recommendations

It appears that they suggest an accumulator with the Johnson VS pump. Every review I've seen when it was coupled with an accumulator showed folks were happy. Mine just showed up but it may be a while till I get a chance to install it.

Struggling with what to offer on a Chris-Craft

I see that now, thanks for pointing that out. I avoid anything to do with Popyachts so appreciate the Boats.com link and the pictures show what looks like the 6.2 Chevy diesels, I agree.

Struggling with what to offer on a Chris-Craft

That boat has twin Chevy gas engines, likely 350's. Nearly zero value with a leaking tank as many have stated.

    Gelcoat shelf life

Unless you are touching up very small spots I've found spraying gelcoat is far easier. A cheap spray gun from harbor freight works well and thin with a small amount of styrene monomer and Acetone. A Preval sprayer works too if you don't have compressed air. I've even air brushed it before for...

Water pump GPM and brands question/recommendations

Timely thread. I happen to have a Johnson Pumps - 10-13329-103 Aqua Jet Flow MSTR Pump 5 GPM in my Amazon cart and will be pulling the trigger on it soon. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0041UDPNY/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_1?smid=AWPBFTW0ZXVPR&psc=1 I found a few negative comments about this...

favorite top 10 harbor towns fun to visit

We went there this year. Cool place, a bit sleepy. Rumor has it there is a van you can borrow to run an errand but we didn't partake. People who work there are very friendly and helpful.

San Diego to Catalina departure timing vs swell (3/23 vs 3/24) advice request

Based on Predict wind I would still be going for it Tuesday morning early and playing it by ear. They are showing more like 4' @6s which isn't horrible, but I don't know how well your boat handles that shorter period. Heading more northerly towards O-side would get you behind the lee of...

San Diego to Catalina departure timing vs swell (3/23 vs 3/24) advice request

I'd go for it based on what I see. It will all be part of the adventure. Duck into Mission Bay and anchor up in Mariners cove if it's an early no-go and kids are sick or head up the coast and see if you can make it to Oceanside if things are iffy. Then wait it out a day and you will have a...

zinc chromate follow up almost 2 years

To my knowledge Rustoleum doesn't make a zinc chromate primer, but they do make cold galvanizing spray. Very different animals. I usually have to search hard to find zinc chromate, and lately I can't get it locally any more. Tempo made it and Moeller and it was sold via West Marine and other...

    Is Anyone Cruising Right Now?

We got out for the first time since putting the boat to bed in November. Nothing special, just a lazy trip to Friday Harbor to shake the dust off. Had some nice weather so got lucky. Only a few minor problems to sort out. Got a chance to hang some engine room cameras which has been on the...

Watch Super Yacht Go crash into the dock

Seems odd to me that the captain mentions the use of the bow thruster but there is no evidence of a bow thruster wake in any of the videos. Also, with the port in reverse and the starboard in forward there is very little movement of the bow to port as you would expect. Perhaps the props are...

Watch Super Yacht Go crash into the dock

Not at all a surprise. Many of us have fly by wire controls and there have been a couple reports of incidents of malfunctions (as listed on this forum) and crashes as a result. I have them on my boat and there is always a bit of a background worry, but I find them very nice to use.
