    Stabilizers: A Must for Passage-Making?

With the poles at a 45º angle the (horizontal) sideways pull on the roof would be equal to the downward pull of the paravanes. Using chainplates for the stays and maybe using two or three stays per pole should distribute the load enough for the roof to handle it. (In my boat the roof is made...

Yes, currently just used at rest.

    Stabilizers: A Must for Passage-Making?

Simi, your boat is so tall you may not need a mast or strongback to support the paravane poles. Just make the poles long enough (for the angle you use) to reach the level of the flying bridge roof and connect them with horizontal stays to chainplates attached to the roof. You can use two or...

    Engine room heat

Totally agree. The problem with the OP's ER it that is has ZERO ventilation: 1) the engines draw air directly from outside the boat through ducting and 2) the blowers in the engine room don't work. So there is no forced air ventilation of the ER whatsoever. I am surprised it is not even...

    Another Teak Deck Post

If I recall correctly, the method recommended in the old Grand Banks Owners forum (IAGBO) was to drive the nail deeper. The head of the ring nail would be marked with a centre punch and then drilled-out. The nail shank would then be driven deeper with a nail punch. A new fastener would be...

That is what I do, unless the tow is brief and weather is fine. The one under the pilot stays on.

    GB 36 Bridge Deck Removal

When I sold my 1979 GB 42 the new owner removed the flying bridge for trucking to England:

Using a Makita 3-3/8" saw to re-groove teak seams?

If you have a Fein or similar oscillating tool you can use flat, horizontal blades to cut the proud seam compound. I have successfully used the second one shown below. Even better and cheaper is to bend a wood chisel (preferably on a vise to keep it straight). I made and used the one shown...

Converting old bulbs to LED question

The color rendering index (CRI) is also important. Try to get at least 85, or 90 or more if possible. If the CRI is not given, beware.

    GB42 Internal Ballast

My earlier boat, a 1979 GB Classic, did not have ballast added. I have read about GB owners sometimes adding ballast but I am not aware of any GBs with loose ballast added by the manufacturer.

Sooo .... how bad is it?

With 20-20 hindsight, the thing to do here is to drain the coolant before changing-out the elbow.

That's right. I have uploaded both A & B to the manuals section for others.

Bad fuel tank - looking for options

Are the tanks just leaking at the top? If so I would try to repair them as the PO of Nick's boat or with fibreglass and epoxy.

Sooo .... how bad is it?

As shown below, the exhaust elbow assembly also seals-off the coolant channels in exhaust manifold. (The channels are open till the end probably for iron casting reasons during manufacture of the manifold.) Removing the elbow could allow coolant into the manifold and engine cylinder...

    Switch from electric to propane

Yes, that is an indispensable safety feature. My earlier boat did not have that but I made sure the stove-oven I bought for my current boat did.

    Switch from electric to propane

My previous boat was a 1979 Grand Banks 42 Classic and it had the factory set-up described by Keith. My current boat had an electric stove and oven but I switched to LPG. I created a vented locker under the flying bridge seat and ran copper tubing straight down to the galley. I added a...

    Fastener organization ideas???

I also like the removable trays like the Festool mentioned. I have three Stanley containers like the one below. The advantage of removable trays is that you can take then out, spread the contents on a surface and look for what you need. Using the "Easy Sorter Funnel Tray" mentioned by...

    Dinghy Chocks install

On my earlier boat, a 1979 GB Classic, I built chocks out of teak blocks as shown below. I simply attached the blocks to the cabin top with Sika 291 which is a sealant and light adhesive. My dinghy was quite heavy so I tied it down with straps to two eye-pads, one in the cabin top and one in...

Any benefit to adding ER ventilation fan?

One issue I see with this approach is that, as mentioned, pressurising the ER could push hot air, smells and even some carbon monoxide into the living quarters. But if the fans are not powerful enough to pressurise the ER it means they are not pushing in any more air than the engines suck in by...
