    Water tanks

In my earlier boat, a 1979 GB 42, the water tanks were fibreglass. What material are yours? BTW, I added a water bladder under the aft cabin sole. The fibre-glass water tanks were in the lazaret and water bladder was connected to the water pipe running from the lazaret tanks to the water pump...

To upgrade or not to upgrade ?

Where is your boat registered? I am in the process of obtaining CE certification for my 1979 boat in order to register it in Spain as they require it.

    Wood GB 33

I agree. A glassed over wood boat is a travesty.

    1978 gb 32 fuel tanks

I am also in agreement with Jungpeter in terms of the drivers of tank failure. But I don't see how he then concludes that tanks have a 20 year life: it can be as little as one year (Peter's example above) or 50 years (and hopefully many more) in my case and others posted here. One needs to...

    lavac head question

I put in in Lavac's in my previous boat and generally liked them. A big improvement was not flushing with seawater but using the hand-held shower-head while flushing with the lid open as fresh water prevents odors. I only had one malfunction with the Lavacs in almost ten years of use. One of...

Here is a bit more history FWIW: Fleming 55 pilothouse motor yacht "Grand Lady", built by Fleming yachts in 2001 and customized (to the highest Swedish boat building craftsmanship) by her current owner in 2007. The current owner has more or less replaced all her equipment to the newest standard...

    Another repair screw up.

That has been my experience. Now, any work I hire-out on my boat I try to closely supervise on a daily basis. I also discuss and insist upon on the materials to use and how to do the work in great detail including surface preparation, sealing, priming, undercoat and finish. And, of course...

    1978 gb 32 fuel tanks

My tanks are almost 50 years old and do not leak. They are clean and show no sign of rust either at the top of the tanks (a common trouble-spot from deck leaks, particularly around the fill pipe) nor anywhere else, including the base where it rests on wooden supports. Six years ago I sold my...

    having an exclusively towed tender

We have been towing 13' Boston Whaler for the last few years. Before dropping the anchor we tie the Whaler on the side towards the stern as shown. We have forward- and backward-leading springs from the bow and a stern line aft (orange lines in drawing). This keeps the dinghy secure in place...

Seeking Advice: 1971 Hatteras 53/60 - take over a family heirloom?

Those Hatteras motor yachts have a sterling reputation, deservedly so from what I understand. And that one is definitively special given the family links and single-owner maintenance history. It is a big step-up from your current boat which has implications on handling, and mooring and...

    Shades or no shades

I would leave the opaque shades down and keep out the UV which is very damaging to most surfaces. If you are concerned about humidity inside the boat you can leave a dehumidifier running or some portholes open for ventilation.

    Grand Banks teak decks question

I had a leak in a similar place in a 42' 1979 GB Cl I previously owned. It turned to be a shoddy repair of the teak decks by a PO who used long screws that broke through the fibre glass deck and allowed water to drip in. Easy to repair once the headliner was removed. Are your decks just...

    Paravanes

True, it could or should have been shorter but, in addition to fully vertical, I wanted to be able to also fold the poles forward or backwards and have them rest on the rub-rails when not in use. I have now rebuilt the hinge plates in stainless steel which I am hoping will be strong enough. If...

    Paravanes

The metal hinge plate that bent was, indeed, aluminium. It was a thick plate, 15 mm I believe, but the alloy probably was not a structural one. It is now stainless steel so it should not bend again. The poles are aluminum, 80 mm diameter with 2 mm walls and 6 m long. The hinge base is...

With a 30 cm "arm" will the boom hinge assembly be able to support the forces from the booms, possibly up to a ton? Bear in mind that only one of the booms at a time will be exerting the high compression force.

    Paravanes

Pascall, the compression forces on the booms can be tremendous, depending on the geometry. Will your booms be in-line with the mast base or offset?

    Wood GB 33

Correlation is not causation. Wooden boats will tend to be older than FG ones. Are their maintenance requirements due to age or material? Wooden hulls don’t rot, wooden under-decks and houses do and FG boats of a certain era have plenty of those.

Engines for my 42' Hatteras LRC

Twin Disc Technodrive 170 with 2.94:1 reduction. I am happy with them. Twin Disc has a solid reputation. They are a bit shorter than the Velvet Drives so the engines will move aft a few centimetres.

Engines for my 42' Hatteras LRC

When I replaced my GM Toro-Flos with Cummins 6Bs I was able to re-use all the instruments except for the tachometers. I kept the temperature and oil pressure sensors from the old engines and installed them in the Cummins. The tachometers for the original engines were Stewart Warner's 811531...
