Agree. I understand geofencing to refer to differentiating between users based on their reported GPS locations. It's clear that's not what they are doing right now, and I'd be surprised if they went down that route in the future, at least with the kind of precision that could distinguish between...

    Interesting boats

I fear the trouble may be more than skin deep. Notice all the sharp corners and lack of handholds. The build quality of the other French boats I’ve seen doesn’t inspire confidence either.

    Interesting boats

I love the Leens in theory, but the IKEA-style interiors are a bigger turn-off for me than the ungainly lines.

    Ford Lehman Biodiesel

It all counts the same individually, but it scales differently collectively. It may feel good to reduce the carbon footprint of one’s own trawler. But as a project “decarbonizing the inside passage” is wasted effort. Total success wouldn’t make a difference to global carbon emissions. That’s...

    Ford Lehman Biodiesel

In a fit of idealism in the early aughts I ran biodiesel in an 80 Mercedes wagon without apparent trouble. I then ran it in a new Mercedes C.D.I. sedan and gunked up the intake manifold to the tune of a several thousand dollar repair. I later found out that the head gasket failed on the previous...

    Quarantine, Trawler Style

I did a telehealth appointment and got a Paxlovid prescription before I cast off. I was feeling pretty crappy but not experiencing any respiratory distress so I figured the risk of needing to go to the hospital and not being able to get myself there was pretty low. I could have just stayed in...

    Quarantine, Trawler Style

So I was lamenting that I would be spending what looked to be the nicest week of the year so far in the office instead of on the water when COVID finally caught up with me. Now my wife was testing negative, so clearly the only reasonable thing to do was to order a mess of groceries on Instacart...

Starlink RV is now Starlink Roam

I had continuous good connectivity with the the flat high performance dish running at ten knots from Shilshole to Mystery Bay State Park near Port Townsend today.

Starlink RV is now Starlink Roam

My evasive support experience concerning coverage notwithstanding, I bet this has to do with being in motion rather than on the water. If they were geofencing use on the water within the regional land-based coverage area, I would expect you wouldn’t be able to connect at all. The fact that you...

How far off shore were you on the run up the coast, and how fast were you going?

Starlink RV is now Starlink Roam

Post 22’s “tongue in cheek” reference to map is what I was trying to verify without success. I also suspect that it is going to work everywhere the map says there is coverage, including on the water near land. It’s just really annoying that they won’t say it outright, and it makes me wonder why.

Starlink RV is now Starlink Roam

I had the following maddening and evasive exchange about what the change in the TOS for Roam means for coastal cruisers. They will not answer whether Roam will work on inland and coastal waters where the service map says there is coverage.

    Just cut loose my genset

I’ve probably spent $20 in maintenance and repair costs for every one of the few hours of use I’ve gotten out of my 5.5 kw NL. I’d love to ditch it but I like having my pilot house roof free for kayaks and paddle boards, and I do need to run it for a few hours in the morning when I’m on the hook...

My guess at what they mean by “land-based location” is a location where the satellite can connect to the internet directly through a ground station instead of through laser connections to other satellites as upon the open ocean. I doubt they would attempt to identify and geofence users who are...

I blame the Internet for any confusion on my part about engine models and boat weights, and I don’t doubt for a second your real-world experience. I was just curious to learn why it takes you roughly double the fuel and power to push your boat with two engines at the same speed as mine with one.

    A Question for Tech Geeks.

Your existing Ethernet should support gig speeds already. There is no reason to mess with it, especially if your speed to the premises is only 150 mb/s. And what’s up with that? We get a full gig from our CenturyLink fiber in the Seattle area.

OK, but apples to apples the twins should be putting out more than double the prop horsepower at 1900 rpm than the single at 1800 rpm. So why are the twins not moving a boat of roughly the same size faster?
