fuel tanks on marine trader 40'

I'd say you're just ahead of the curve. There is a huge cohort of boats built in the 1980s that are just now coming due for tank replacement. Like you, accessibility to tanks and machinery was high on my list when I went looking for my current boat. Everything is going to break. Plan...

DC to DC chargers mount location

Temperature sensing may be another concern. Voltage drop is more critical on the output side. Lots of good reasons to mount them close to the battery being charged IMO.

    Battery Question

How is each bank charged? There's a root cause here somewhere. IIRC the low voltage cutoff on the inverter is adjustable. You should be able to run down to 11v or maybe lower. Hope you can recover the batteries.

    Bow Thruster Power Sources

My guess is that you'll find the other end connected directly to one of your battery banks, maybe with a shutoff switch. How is the thruster battery charged? I'll go out on a limb here, and say that originally the thruster was powered from the house bank, and somewhere along the line someone...

Thinking of down sizing to a Sundowner 30

Me too! I haven't been aboard one, but have admired them from the outside. Good luck with the switch. I don't think you'll regret it.

2008 mainship 34 GPS antenna location

Maybe it doesn't have an external antenna.

Will the Titanic claim a few more?

CBC is reporting that the last text received was less than two hours after the descent began.

Wiring dedicated inverter for new AC only fridge

I think the concerns over inrush are based on outdated technology. Modern fridges have variable output compressors that run the majority of the time. The compressors don't run on line voltage. See...

Submarine missing - private Titanic expedition

I would think that safety gear would include having radios aboard, including an EPIRB. I read somewhere that the sub was regularly towed back and forth between St John's and the wreck, something like 300 miles each way.

Dinghy naming, is it a thing?

I think it's important to identify the mother ship somewhere on the dinghy, in case of loss. I had one break loose while anchored during a storm - my fault - and only realized it was gone when a helpful local arrived with it in tow.

2023 cruising, So Where are You Going?

Thanks. I'm heading up the Welland Canal then east on the Erie. I have an aversion to return trips :-) I went north from the canal into Rochester about five years ago and didn't find much of interest. Has that changed? Seems like there could be more there - at least a restaurant with a...

Wiring dedicated inverter for new AC only fridge

Skip the dedicated inverter and put the funds and efforts into batteries/solar. Easy choice IMO.

Wiring dedicated inverter for new AC only fridge

I don't understand. If you're plugged in the big inverter is on but in pass-through mode, right? You don't care about parasitic loss then, and the fridge is running on the shore power.

    Why do boats squat?

As you speed up a trough is created behind the bow wave. At hull speed the trough is under the stern. The stern doesn't sit lower in the water, rather the water at the stern is lower than the water at the bow.

Wiring dedicated inverter for new AC only fridge

I think you're asking the right questions. I'm not sure that a smaller inverter is more efficient. I haven't done a detailed comparison, but don't think you'll find any big differences in efficiency. Victron quotes maximum efficiency on the Phoenix at 89%.

Unresolved problems with Cummins QSB 6.7 liter engine

Ted, my understanding with the same engine was similar to yours, until I started having problems similar to the OP. There was no trace in the logs of my failures. Eventually I replaced the ECM and all is now good. But there were no diagnostics available from JD to identify the specific...

    Sold OA 440 on Semi-trailer

I'm pretty sure the US Interstate system specifies a 16 ft minimum. The challenge is usually finding routes at either end. Any idea of the cost?

Has the fog lifted permanently in New England?

I grew up in Nova Scotia and sailed a lot there until leaving in the late 80s. I was back in home waters for summer 2021. It was shockingly different. Warm, very little fog, seals everywhere, and Great Whites enjoying good hunting. I'd suggest that fog in that area is likely forecastable and...

    Opinions on makes

I recently had a close inspection of the intricate door carvings of a Cheer men boat. My bet is they're molded plastic glued on and hand painted.

Wiring dedicated inverter for new AC only fridge

Modern fridges cycle very frequently and run at low power. So zero load parasitic draw may not be as big a concern as you think. I'd run the fridge on the house inverter, and spend extra money if need be on getting a very energy efficient fridge. I live unplugged, and run my 2kw...

Wiring dedicated inverter for new AC only fridge

A fancier inverter will incorporate the functionality you want and switch automatically between AC and DC. Like a Victron MultiPlus 12/500/20. That's overkill as you probably don't need the charger, but it'll work. There are many non-Victron offerings out there. I think I'd do as Commodave...

    I think I just bought a boat.

Welcome. I'm pretty sure there are other Roughwater owners here. Life at 7 knots can be great. It's a mindset more than anything.

Cruise 10-15kts with OB power under 30'?

Well put. The east coast lobster boats that I grew up with all had very little deadrise aft and a relatively fine bow with lots of flare. They can be wet. They don't really plane. The HP/speed curve is very smooth. There is no discernable transition. And many travel at 1.5 - 3 S/L speeds...

I remember the thread here when you were contemplating the conversion. Nice to see the result.
