    Interesting boats

Wow - congrats! Please keep us posted, suggest you start a new thread to document the engine swap if you have the energy for it. Sounds like a great upgrade.

    Mobius XPM for sale

I agree with Simi. Maybe a few things like the heated floors, but for the most part it seems on par with or below the complexity of vessels with similar capabilities. Amazing vessel for sure, and a crazy price (not that I can afford it!)

    Major Service Cost Lehman 120

Great advice here. One more idea: if you do want to hire it out and find a good mechanic, if at all possible try to be there when the work is done - ideally you'll get a good talker who will prattle on as they work and you'll end up learning a *ton* of important stuff about your engines at no...

    Major Service Cost Lehman 120

Yeah I wouldn't characterize that as a major service - that's more like an annual service. I agree that it's great to do it yourself, but if not, pricing will depend on location. I got a quote of something like $600 for an oil/filter change here in San Diego at a fuel dock. I did it myself in...

    Finally….boat choice.

Congrats! What an exciting day for you - do keep us posted. What are the details? Any pics/renders?

    Solar breakthrough?

Any business is going to use whatever funds are available to move forward, including government incentives. The incentives are put in place to accelerate the industry, which is deemed to be in the national and global interest. You can agree/disagree but it's the same for all industries...

    Solar breakthrough?

That document is from 2015. The above was true in 2015. It's not anymore.

Bilge Keel - Rolling Chock installation

Interesting thoughts on combining methods. Those gyros go up quickly in price, weight, and power consumption with size, so I wonder if you might be able to spec a size down with the bilge keels. That seems like a nice combination.

    Happy wife happy life? Hmmm

That is one of my all time favorites. My wife showed it to me and we had a good laugh. I gently reference it every few months when she... behaves in that manner and it gets another laugh.

    Interesting boats

Horses for courses. That's not a livaboard boat IMHO, it's for a couple living in, say, Seattle, who wants an expanded range for a long weekend or 1-2 week cruise.

    Interesting boats

I love Nigel Irens designs. The Rangeboat looks like the ultimate PNW cruiser for a couple: efficient, gorgeous, perfect size, capable of a turn of speed when needed. Dream boat!

    Solar breakthrough?

Yeah - they all move in parallel though. A big part of the $/W improvements are driven by efficiency improvements (more Watts from the same material cost) which is great when space is limited.
  13. socalrider

    Solar breakthrough?

The story of solar progress has been of steady decrease in $/Watt over ~70 years driven by tens of thousands of person-hours of work, hundreds of small incremental improvements, and a pretty traditional manufacturing learning curve, where costs come down by X% with every cumulative doubling of...

    Happy wife happy life? Hmmm

I personally can't imagine being in a position where I felt I needed to choose between a boat and my wife. I'd pull way back and figure out how you got to that point rather than trying to make the "correct" choice, as they are probably both wrong.

    Step-up transformers 12V to 24V

Yeah I don't think thee's a need for a 24V bus. FYI a transformer only changes AC voltage. I think the tech you're referring to should be called a "DC-DC converter". That said, what you need is a higher output USB charging port, for example...

PNW to Mexico, Panama Canal, and Florida, on our way at last!

Do you really need to get pesos before going to MX? I've never gone by boat but have traveled extensively throughout MX for 25 years; been to every state. I've never gotten pesos in the US, nor have I ever exchanged dollars for pesos in MX for that matter. Any ATM can give you pesos at a much...

    Electric outboard motors

Yeah - this is our bet option (that I've found) in CA. Honestly not a huge deal for a 2.5hp outboard since it uses so little gas. But still a pain in the neck.
  18. socalrider

    Electric outboard motors

Yeah it's a 2-3hp replacement, not a 20-40hp replacement. It'll stay that way for quite a while as much as I'd like a 20hp planing electric dinghy.

Looking for similar to Defever 53

I don't think you'll find a 2000's flush deck 53-footer in the $350k range at least from what I've seen out there. I looked at a 51 POC here in San Diego and it is a very appealing vessel though less tankage and more powerful engines than I'd personally want. A "35 year old hull" is just as...

PNW to Mexico, Panama Canal, and Florida, on our way at last!

Yeah that's a mic drop ground tackle setup! In the channel islands you can anchor in 90 feet and run aground when the wind shifts! Good to have a lot of chain here.

    Electric outboard motors

We've had the ePropulsion spirit for 3 seasons now and love it. The only issues have been: 1. Shaft is too long; they've since come out with a 15" version which I wish we had. As it is, the tail of the unit doesn't clear the water when tilted up, so we get growth. 2. The LCD has washed out...

    Travels with Weebles

Do you have a kelp stick? That's what we SD sailors use, especially when racing, to clear rudders and keels. Might be able to make it work for your fins. Here's an example; I imagine you can find something less expensive. Sailors love carbon fiber...

    New boat sales falling...

Not sure where you got this info, but attached for reference is the last 3 years of real (inflation adjusted) quarterly GDP. 22Q1 and 22Q2 are slightly negative, all other quarters are positive. The economy has been on a tear since then. https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/GDPC1 Interesting...

PNW to Mexico, Panama Canal, and Florida, on our way at last!

Nice! Recommend the Channel Islands over Catalina if you end up stopping (though we love Catalina, and it'll be relatively quiet this time of year).

Excellent - thanks for sharing! Let me know if you need anything while in San Diego; also can serve as a shipping address if you find out you need anything while en route.
