As mentioned up-thread, the operator is responsible for wake damage even if you are in unrestricted waters. As annoying as it may be to drop down off plane because a couple guys decided to stop and fish in a no-speed-limit channel, you will be held liable if your wake causes injury or damage.

I'd like to see where that is printed in the Col Reg's.

Read Inland overtaking sound signals....rule 34.

There is supposed to be an "agreement" on passing. Whether sound or radio.

If not an agreement, the stand on sounds five or more blasts signaling don't pass me on that side.

Without agreement a risk of collision in understood if the pass is made.

But everyone is correct in. That it is mostly not done, including law enforcement vessels.
