I’ve got the 2nd type, but I understand that these kinds of measurements require a much more accurate hydrometer.
 
JD, the first hydrometer should work fine for your use, you simply want to compare cells to look for a weak one. If the readings aren't 100% accurate it shouldn't matter as you are looking for differences between cells.

Or a refractometer for electrolytes. I will admit I have never used one but have been looking at them.

As for the hydrometer i have used these. I always look for the ones with the temp. scale as part of the hydrometer.

Don't flooded batteries take a number (30? or 40?) of cycles before they reach design output? Could subtle differences among the eight batteries account for this?
