Picking a new name for our tug

Lot of advice says don't pick a name you have to explain. When I selected Seeadler, it was an emotional, nostalgic choice that I often had to explain and that was quite enjoyable. ...and occasionally one met someone who knew the history and that was even better.

Think a name speaks to who you are but also the reader’s response may tell you something about who they are.
Hippo means horse as in hippopotamus (river horse) or hippodrome ( horse course). Hippocampus means seahorse. Romance language speakers and Greeks seem to know this. As do some educated English speakers.
To these groups they often respond with a chuckle and/or I’m asked if I’m a neurologist, neurosurgeon or neuroscientist. Some English speakers refuse to respond with anything other than hippopotamus. Particularly US folks and western Canadians. Eastern Canadians seem to have less trouble even if not québécois speakers.
The name often sparks up a pleasant conversation on the VHF or with dock walkers. So yes sometimes it’s troublesome to have that name but sometimes it’s fun. Evens out.
I’d think twice about a cute, or sexual innuendo or ETOH referring name in that it maybe off putting and cause people to prejudge you.

Surprisingly, no other Weebles in a VesselFinder.com lookup. There is a US flagged "Weeble" so close. Not that it makes much difference.

You are probably right there. I remember sailing with a club and two boats called Serenity. When a massif ship came into the bay. Radio said "Serenity 22 and Serenity 27, please be aware that Serenity 500 has just entered the bay."

Vessel finder shows 9 “hippocampus “ world wide. Only two US flagged and I think one was mine but name wasn’t updated.

That's a good sight to check. I checked for Hummingbird and there are loads of them. Cross that off the list.


There are also a ton of Walrus.


I searched for my previous sailboat name 'Callipygian' but no results and her name was changed by a PO. Won't work for my Sundowner.

I quite like "Walrus". But I`ve owned 5 boats( Shiraz/Sundancer/Antibes/Doriana/Sojourn),never changing any of them. Considered changing the Island Gypsy from "Doriana" to "Gypsy Queen" but didn`t.

40+ years ago i was towing my 19 foot Bayliner with some guests in my chevy van.

they asked...when are you getting your next boat. I replied when I can buy her with loose change. that became the name of my 30 footer which i still own after 35 years.

my 50 footer was named the Unicorn when I bought her. I immediately thought i am going to change the name. after 4 years I decided i like it and keep it for the rest of time.

A quick check shows thousands of dogs named Radar, with black labs being the third most popular breed so named.
