Ahoy!
Forum newbie, Mike Paull, hailing port Seattle, WA. The Admiral (my wife, Aillene) and I purchased our first power boat last Nov, a fine and much-loved 1984 Tollycraft 48, in fact, a "Retirement 2.0" gift to myself, and a means of insuring that I stayed retired <g>.
The Tolly has been an incredible learning experience. I spent the first months of ownership learning her equipment and systems, and spent hundreds of hours refitting her, in addition to taking 50 hours of on-the-water instruction from two different CG-licensed Captains, with a focus on close-quarters maneuvering - best money I ever spent.
She is a fine boat for cruising the waters of the Salish Sea:
. . . and we got her out on the water as often as we could over the past 5 months of the 2015 Northwest cruising season:
We had great fun and made many new boating friends at mini-cruises and Tolly Rendezvous with the Queen City Yacht Club and Tollycraft Boating Clubs (2015 Tolly Rendezvous, Roche Harbor, San Juan Island, WA - "Safari" theme):
Though the Tolly was my first power boat, in years past, I owned a couple of smaller "blow boats", and crewed as foredeck money on a number of sailboats over the years. So the boating bug has always been there, but the Tolly has kicked it up a notch, and as much as I love her, she just isn't the right boat for the next phase, longer and longer-range coastal cruising.
So, for Retirement 2.1, I just closed the deal on a 2002 Transpacific Marine Eagle 53 "fast-trawler". The short list included models from Nordhaven, Seahorse/Diesel Duck, Ocean Alexander (the "Classico"), Selene and Krogen, Cherubini, and the finalist, an Eagle 53. The Eagle met all the wish list bullets: twin diesel, Portuguese bridge, pilothouse, flybridge, ample boat deck, port and starboard bulwarks doors, stern door, tumblehome stern, stout swim platform, and most salient, all the boat I could afford!
Hope to take delivery of the Eagle next week. Look forward to learning from and sharing with all of you. This is a great forum, I've already learned a lot from your contributions!
If you're interested, here are some stock images of the Eagle from the Transpac and EagleTrawler websites:
Best Regards,
MikeP
