Grand Banks Classic 42’ Trawler
I just became the new Proud owner of My 1974 GB 42’ Classic, and as most older GB’s she has some window issues that I need to attend to in order to restore her to Prestine condition. I would like to rebuild them to as new condition. Any help on acquiring original window tracks, Felts, seals, would be greatly appreciated, as well as any pointers that would help me perform this task.

I had a 72 woodie GB42, so the arrangement may be different. The exterior frames were attach to the cabin side by slotted bronze wood screws which could be found by sanding the vertical surfaces of the frames to bare wood. Then I used a Forstner bit to clear out the wooden bung before cleaning out the slot in the screw. I used an impact driver (Milwaukee) to remove the screw and a Milwaukee vibrating multi-tool with saw blade to cut the caulking between the frame and the cabine side. Now the fixed and sliding glass can be removed. I ordered ne stainless window channel and went to a local shop with the old broken panes and had them replaced. Channel from C.R. Laurence Co., Inc. The big trick was getting the slider and its channels in. I did it by getting the stationary pane and bottom and side frame pieces back in place before installing the slider and then the top frame with channel. My brother has recently done this on his 85 GB42 and has drawing I think. You should search here for his posts on it.

Recommendation for Expert GB Work in N. California

This all sounds a bit ambitious for me and my 1978 GB Classic. I'd like to find a expert GB repair facility or yard in northern California to do this kind of work, including topsides painting. Maybe a west coast equivalent of Oxford Yacht's Dickerson facility (https://oya.com) rather than generic boatyard like KKMI. Any recommendations from the forum?

Talk with Bayside Boatworks in Sausalito. They paint a lot of boats. I’ve always had good work from them. The owner’s name is “Mike”.

In addition to Bayside, call “Skip” at Oceanic Yacht Sales in Sausalito and ask him. He deals with GBs often and can probably direct you to a reputable yard.

Hi and thanks. I know Oceanic and Skip well (Bought my GB from them 20 years ago) and have taken my GB several times to Anderson (Now KKMI) yard next door. I’ll try Bayside but am hoping to find a GB specialist that I might have missed ;-)
