Cummins 6BT5.9M exhaust riser expected life

They recommended to wet it out before installing it so I did, keeps the dust down. I don’t remember exactly how much I used but I think it was like 2 layers thick. Then used the S/S tye wraps to secure it. I didn’t cover it with anything and it seemed fine for the 6 years we owned that boat.

Update, I found records from the previous owner. The last time the exhaust was repaired was 2004. 19 years without an inspection. I will be pulling the Stb side exhaust in a week or so. I will post what I find.

You can often find new take-offs on ebay. Nineteen years, you are on borrowed time for stock Cummins elbows in salt water.

Pulled the stb exhaust today. It is about the same as the port side I refurbished last summer. I took a sharp punch to one of the bigger pits. I couldn't knock a hole in it. It would probably go another few years. Its been 19 years since it was worked. Seems abnormal from all I have read. I will have it reworked and put a new inner pipe and spray ring on it.

All done. 316SS used. Insulation is two layers of 1" ceramic blanket.
