Are Yeti coolers worth the cost?

Forget ice, forget draining coolers, forget soggy food, just get an Engel A/C-D/C fridge/freezer. Mine is ten years old, used weekly in boats and RV’s and still running strong.

Those are fantastic. BUT, what if you have no power?

What do you do at home if you lose power? I read here so many concerns about losing power. How many cruisers are losing it? We've never lost all power while cruising. Now may happen tomorrow, but seems sometimes like protecting against highly unlikely events.

Oh and we do the same thing at home we do on the water, go to the generator.

I'm not referring to a "power outage event", I agree with you on that... everyone panics, almost all outages are a couple hours except for the big storms (hurricane/tornado) which having a cooler is the least of you problems!


I'm talking about being in an anchorage for a week. Unless you have some solar panels to run it, the "electric cooler" is useless. And if you have solar panels OR power all the time, just use the Fridge and Freezer, no need for a cooler in the first place!

Pete - If you are gonna move the "big Yeti" from area to area very often... I recommend a couple months weight lifting training before purchase! LOL

Probably right Art, but my plan is to use it for ice and cold storage and very seldom have to move it.

Now that Pete has decided to buy a real big Yeti, I'm wondering if anyone has used dry ice in their coolers?

Yeti says the Tundra and Roadie Hard Cooler are dry ice compatible. Realizing that you would want to store a cooler with dry ice on deck due to carbon dioxide gassing, has anyone tried dry ice in their coolers? I have not, but my local supermarket has a freezer of it or sale.

After reading this thread I'm buying a big OtterBox. I like the spouse-friendly latches and the slightly slanted interior bottom for draining.

Used dry ice twice. Cost seemed not productive compared to block ice. Once I put liquids too close... froze them. YRMV... for general food storage. Imagine for continued freezing dry ice would be cool! Pun intended - LOL

I've been reading about the Otterbox too. I like the accessories, i.e. partitions, drink holders, cutting boards etc. Seriously thinking about buying one of these as well.
