    Yacht Clubs--good or bad idea

Been a member of Royal Perth Yacht Club (in Australia) for near 25 years now. There is the usual sail vs power rivalry and every club has it's peculiar members. But, overall have enjoyed it. Have made some great friends over the years where we share a passion for boating. If you like...

    Thoughts on dinghies???

Hi Bruce Yes, it's a Riviera 34 - 1984 vintage. But about the only thing that's '84 is the hull - virtually everything has been upgraded/replaced. Repowered in 2008. I'm in Perth. The transom is not timber, but just painted maroon - it's the way I got the boat in 1994. A bit worn now and...

    Thoughts on dinghies???

Walker Bay dinks I've had a Walker Bay 275H now for 3 years - still love it! Previously I've had a couple of Zodiac inflatables - but much prefer the hard bottom dink. I bought the optional inflatable taubes, which give the dink incredible stability - you can't tip it. It will easily carry 4...

    Rode markings - What

RE: Rode markings? I use a slight variation on the theme... I have an all chain rode, and I paint the markings. But I use the roman numeral system AND space the markings at the point where the amount of chain out is for a 4:1 scope. This way, I look at the depthsounder, and if it reads 4m...

    amp guage or volt meter

I've used the BEP monitor now for almost 7 years - has never missed a beat.* It's also quite surprising how much energy is actually used vs how quickly (slowly) that energy gets replenished.* Only and AH meter can tell you that. By the way, it comes with a huge shunt that gets installed in the...

    Bruce/Claw

I use a 25Kg Bruce with an all chain rode on my 34' Riviera for 7 years now.* Absolutely fantastic in most cases.* Has dragged once, and that was in a weedy bottom.* It's also hard to set in weed, but thankfully, weedy bottoms are not to prevalent around here.* I'm told that about the only thing...

    Dink lighting

I use the Navisafe Red/green light - one on the bow and the other on the outboard.* They have a magnetic mounting disc which I glued to the boat/outboard.* The lights themselves float and are interchangeable front/back.

    Fender arrangement on a dock

Have a look at "Freedom Fenders" They are designed to hang horizontally. I bought a pair a few years ago and have been a godsend. Made by Taylor Marine. Google it.

    Dinks

BaltimoreLurker: The davit is secured to brackets that attach at the right angles to match the transom and coaming (the angles for each are just slightly different). There are two brackets, one which sits on the edge of the coaming and the lower one which sits flat against the transom.*...

    Dinks

Last year we purchased a Walker Bay RID 275H rigid bottom dink. With the inflatable tube that normally sits just out of the water, the dink is super stable and virtually untipable. There is lots of room to carry stuff, which includes 4 good size adults. The 2hp motor is enough to push us along -...

    Dinghy Running Lights

I know the last post is almost a year ago, but I just came across these neat dingy nav lights. They're called "Navisafe Red-Green". They are powered by AAA batteries in a waterproof (and floating) package. Pressing the top button gives you a red/green combination. Pressing the button again gives...

    Removing carpet glue

On my boat the carpet had been glued to an originally moulded non-skid surface. I got the carpet off OK and most of the glue, but a lot of glue remains in all the crevices of the non-skid surface. The glue has hardened but can be easily 'picked' out with a very small screwdriver or awl. But...

What is it with women, boats and color combos?

So few guys are lucky enough to have wives that enjoy boating as much as the men. Far too many couples seem to go their own way when it comes to boats, and often this results in further tensions because of the money that has to be spent on boats. So, if having cushions and curtains will make...
