    Oceanside, CA Harbor

Oceanside and Dana Point We moved from DP to Oceanside about 9 years ago. DP was aging and the revitalization “project” had been under discussion since 1997 with no end in sight. There is finally some activity starting; I noticed last night that a block of slips has been emptied, presumably so...

Underway - Ensenada to San Diego

I have made that journey more than thirty times on 27’ and 38’ sailboats heading for home after the Newport to Ensenada race. Looks like you had a pleasant ride. We normally returned to San Diego at night; northbound daytime trips can be sloppy in the spring, but nights are typically fairly...

Puget Sound NDZ and Dye Tablets

Avalon still requires the dye tab test. Failing the test or interfering with it gets you removed from the harbor and denied use of the harbor for a year. If you refuse to take the test you can’t use the harbor. Oceanside Harbor requires us to have our boats inspected every three years and they...

Best cell provider for Catalina Island?

On Cheers we get internet service in our Oceanside slip using the hotspot feature on my iPhone7. We haven’t tried it with laptops, but it has enough “oomph” to support YouTube video on two iPads concurrently. I haven’t tried the hotspot at the Island, but the cell reception has been good...

    My Quarantine Cruise of 2020

I read that the Catalina Island Company is discouraging visitors. Restaurants are closed. Don’t know about grocers. ☹️

trawler cruising from cabo to san diego

This is a tough trip. There’s a reason it’s called the Baja Bash. Some thoughts: — wind and seas are generally from the north — there is a 1/2 to 1 knot persistent current flowing south — there are only a couple of places to fuel — and the fueling places don’t have anything but fuel. So... —...

    Bilge pump mystery

The OP didn’t say whether “flipping” the float switch turned off the running pump. A couple of weeks ago I was spending the night on Cheers and when I was going to bed I heard an unusual noise. After some investigation I discovered that the float switch in my midship bilge was activated and...

Food restrictions for US boat entering B.C./Canada

Clearly you are not aware of the Miniature Plastic Palm Tree Virus. If your tree was contaminated, it could have infected and ruined the entire industry! :D

    Fire extinguisher

Dry chemical cleanup In the early 2000’s I was racing my Catalina 27 around San Clemente Island. As we were nearing the island I went off watch and went to the head. The boat lurched while I was getting my pants down and I lurched with it and bumped the extinguisher in the (small) head...

Aeronca Champ, C150/172/177/182, T-33/T-37/C-47 (30 minutes each ROTC indoctrination :socool:). Gave it up after about 300 hours ($$$). Thought boating would be much less expensive. One of my many miscalculations. :D

    Ft. Lauderdale area recommendations

Just as a data point, the shipyard in Oceanside charges $120 per hour. I found an excellent free-lance mechanic who charges $80. He does engines, electrical, fiberglass.... I don’t know what the Dana Point shipyard is charging these days (I did all my own work on my Catalina 27 when I was in DP)...

    Boating IS a good investment...

A friend in the PNW recently posted a FB picture of his Nordic 37 in Friday Harbor shortly after splashing from a routine haulout. He was bragging a bit about having the boat in tip-top condition. I replied with the “you just don’t know it yet” quote. The next day his wife told me the impeller...

Red Hats Mount Gay Rum has red hats that have an event name embroidered on them. I think I have somewhere north of 40 of them, most from the Newport to Ensenada race (it’s on April 27 this year). I have a few others: Long Beach YC Congressional Cup, San Diego YC Yachting Cup, a few charity...

    West Marine Amazon Price Match

I matched on a float switch purchase a few days ago. WM $40. Brought up Defender on my phone and showed the store manager the $32 price. She verified the part number and rang me up for $32 plus tax. No problem. Piece of cake.
