Searching for a Seattle Boat - 60' Providence

Looks like a beautiful day there. Probably not good timing to call and see if he wants to sell yet…

Didn’t know Providence had a sister ship.

Searching for a Seattle Boat - 60' Providence

Did you get any photos by chance? My broker contacted the owner last year and was told the boat is not for sale. Some day that will change and I hope I'm there when it does. Based on what little I have seen she is my perfect boat!

Flushing and sterilizing an RO is to avoid biological growth and fouling of the membranes. The cooler the water and ambient temp the slower the bio growth. What you can get away with in Vancouver is very different from the tropics. Back when a 2.5” x 40” membrane cost $1,500 each, folks were...

Would you buy a boat that "rested on the bottom briefly?"

Offer $50k and put $100k into a complete renewal. Every piece of wire replaced with tinned copper. Engine and generator out major regardless of hours. Its a ton of work to save $50k.

Thanks for the warm welcome. Good to see you. Did you get the new boat home safe and sound?

I'm not sure I follow the question. Did I get something wrong (which I'm very capable of doing).

And I sincerely appreciate your opinion. Thank you. After the last 18 months watching the debacle unfold and the sad state of politics being injected into medicine I am reluctant to quickly accept any studies. Who knows who is telling the truth anymore?

Yes sir, a passivation filter between RO and tank will help improve the situation provided all the chemical is not consumed before the pump. A steel watertank would likely plate out and consume 100% and leave the pump unprotected. You can only get so much calcite/corrosex into solution before...

Here is a chart that depicts metals hierarchy. The top is most sacrificial to bottom most noble. Combining different metals in the same solution can create other problems. Plastics are a great solution provided its material that wont itself leach. HDPE, PET, Delrin, Celcon and to a lesser...

    HAM HF Radio on Boats

Good Lord, the band activity might prove that wrong. Traffic gets downright packed on 20M and 40M in the evenings. As our summer weather moderates (lightning static) I'm finding 80M and 160M getting very active too. I can't imagine a time when it was busier. Perhaps you meant specifically on boats?

    HAM HF Radio on Boats

Thats great stuff! Thanks. How do you handle grounding and bonding? Looks like your boat is FRP. Do you have a bonding plate on the bottom? Do you use a zinc "fish" in lightning storms for added protection of the antenna? How is the noise level on 20M while sitting in fresh water? I would think...

For every action there is a reaction. So we add ZOP or calcite/corrosex to passivate our corrosive RO water which plates the metal components and protects from corrosion. Smart. But this protective layer is insulating and that inhibits heat transfer in a HW tank. The heating elements are now...

Water is incredibly complex. Ground water and its contaminants is an entire world of study and new relationships are being discovered constantly. I was wrong earlier when I said no minerals are adsorbed by the body from drinking water. Obviously we can adsorb things from drinking water. What I...

Cast iron in SWRO permeate is sacrificial and will continue to leach and corrode. It may take years but it will eventually consume the pump internals. The only way to stop this corrosion is to plate it with zinc orthophosphate or a calcite/corrosex passivation filter. We always installed these...

In my opinion, truly pure water (14 meg) is probably not wise to drink. I wouldn't suggest drinking distilled water long term although I will take a swig on occasion. Drinking SWRO permeate from a healthy RO unit is excellent and millions of folks do so every day without issue. You can find...

    Shortage of distilled water

Demin bottled water is typically tap water run through ion exchange resin beds. Many process water facilities will run either some form of still followed by demin for boiler feed. A newer and less expensive trend is using two pass RO followed by demin. For batteries I would only use distilled...

    Shortage of distilled water

Just a general reference for those interested. Pure water = 14 megohm resistive (not conductive but insulating) for semi conductor mfg. USP Water For Injection = 1-5 ppm TDS conductive Distilled process water = 5-8 ppm TDS conductive (high pressure boiler feed, etc) Distilled bottle water =...

RO permeate has a relatively low pH and drops about 1 point from the feedwater pH. Average seawater is around 7.2 so permeate will be around 6.2. RO permeate has little to no alkalinity or hardness. Combined with dissolved oxygen this makes the permeate unstable and aggressive. Water wants to...

A really nice and robust prefilter for marine use is a 5” x 20” Big Blue housing adapted to use 3” x 18” standard size polypropylene bag filter in 5 micron. My cost for these are under $200 and bags are cheap. Huge sand and particulate capacity. The bag filter followed by a 5M cartridge is all...

Nothing at all wrong with adding taste modifiers to drinking water. A client paid a fortune to add a bottling line with a brand that tasted like Fiji Water. That was challenging adding all the hardness to match Fiji chemistry while not exceeding potable limits on saturation. Took about 6 months...

The use of words here being undefined make discussing the topic difficult. "De-mineralized" is one. SWRO is not by definition a "de-mineralizer". Typically demineralization is performed in high purity water systems using ion selective resins. Some use ion exchange resins like that used in water...
