How to handle one engine failing?

If you have 2 motors and have an engine failure, what do you do? Controlling the boat isn't a big deal but what do you do with the dead engine. I've read something about securing the shaft so the prop doesn't keep spinning the transmission. I'll admit, I don't know how to stop the shaft from...

    Wanted: WTB Furuno GP-37

I just might. I did a search and the GP-37 unit looks more familiar. I have 2 of whatever GPS receivers it is. I pulled all my electronics out this winter. Putting it all on eBay was on this weeks To Do list. I've got GPS, sonar, radar, open array. I'll look when I get home tonight. Found...

How to anchor for a week?

Our routine feels like Ground Hogs Day but we love it. Take the dog for a morning walk to get her zoomies out. Coffee, breakfast, shower, chill for a minute, lunch, read, go to shore to wear out the dog, dinner, dishes, bed. Not once have we turned on the TV. YouTube on the phone is nice...

    How do you Tool?

I'm also interested in the solution guys have found. I've always used tool bags. Current (new to us) boat has a big Craftsman tool box but I don't like it. It takes up a lot of space for what it holds. Worst part is running back and forth to it. I like moving the bag to where I'm working...

    Chain size

Thanks everyone for the input. I think I'm going to stick with the 3/8 but switch back to the original G4. I've found 400ft delivered to Anacortes for a reasonable price.

    Chain size

Going back to the original 3/8 G4 chain is definitely the easiest option with 5200 lb WLL. The current 3/8 G3 chain only has a WLL of 2600 lbs, good to around 30 kts of wind. We run for marinas or cover in storms but 30 kts is not uncommon.

    Chain size

This boat is new to us since September. The anchor chain is 3/8 G3 chain. It was 3/8 G4 from the factory in 1999. We are 75-80k lbs and 64' LOA. The 3/8 G3 chain makes me nervous so new chain has moved to the top of my priority list. I'm thinking upsize to 7/16 G4. IMTRA in Massachusetts...

Where to drop anchor when stern tying?

I always watch everyone drop their anchor because sometime you learn something. Laura Cove is fairly tight in spots and no one dropped past the middle. 30-40% with most being closer to 30%.

    Thank you.

What is this in the oil system?

It's my first oil change on this boat. Anyone know what this is? I know it's part of the oil system. It measures oil flow. I have a guess but it's only a guess. Thanks

    Stern tie line

Thank you for the info. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one trying to solve this puzzle?

    Stern tie line

I've been searching for months to find an answer on appropriate stern tie line size. I'm pretty sure the yellow polypropylene line I had for our last boat was undersized. We upsized boats last summer, so now I need a larger stern tie line. The question is: how strong (breaking strength) is...

Dog pee & poop on the boat

We went thru this last summer with our weimaraner puppy. 1. Get a piece of astro turf or whatever. 2. Get a different dog to pee on it. Do not rinse. 3. Next boat trip, place on swim platform or rinsable surface when you know the dog has to pee. Done. It's tough once the dog figures out they...

    Too big or too small?

Charter a couple times. There's an outfit in Anacortes that does a 3 day "Big Boat" course which covers 52-56 feet. I took it a couple years ago, it's great. The focus is mostly parking. After that you can take out any of their boats. I also think bigger is easier to drive. Washing is...

    Lower helm station

Our last boat, Meridian 391, didn't have a lower helm. We loved all the extra space. I've done rough weather from the FB. It was fine and the 391 is a light boat. I prefer a boat with only a FB helm.

    Lithium Ion Batts and Fires

We have a fire bag on board all aircraft in case a device battery has a runaway. Boats are different in that we can just throw it overboard. The poor quality and high output of device batteries is also why they must all be removed from your luggage and not stored in the baggage compartment.

MFD / Chartplotter Size and qty

I've been replacing the 1999 electrics the last couple weeks. Almost done with the PH. I decided three 12" Garmins because of cost. Two 22" are pretty cool but 4 times the cost.of three 12s The FB is next.

Is it a boat or a yacht? Handgrenade question

I was surprised to learn this a few years ago. I had a 28' Duckworth fishing boat and thought I wasn't a small craft anymore. "There's no exact legal definition of a small craft; however, small craft advisories are generally intended for vessels less than 65 feet in length OR for any vessel...

    Switching to LED lights

Yes that is correct. The inverter has to be on to have lights. Although the inverter would be on anyway for the fridge. Very inefficient to go from DC battery power to AC back to DC for a LED. That is why I'd like to move over to the DC panel. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing...

    Switching to LED lights

I can't wait. I've already burned myself twice. The best part is all the LEDs are already there just waiting to be installed. It's a free upgrade.

    Switching to LED lights

There are four 120v AC lighting (salon, master, guest, wheel house) breakers. They go to separate 120v AC - 12v AC transformers. I want to remove the 12v AC transformer and move that circuit over to separate 12v DC breakers. This is to fix the already installed LED lights that flicker at 60...

    Switching to LED lights

Hello, Are there any experts that can confirm my thinking on LED lights conversion. We purchased a 1999 Westbay in August. The prior owner was in the process of replacing the interior halogen lights with LEDs. On the first showing, we notice the LED's were flickering like they were connected...
