    Russian Trawler Update #7 (Final)

Kthoennes - a terrible story that I think we all thought we would never see in Europe in this century. :( Portugal is great. Definitely not sad to be here. So far, everything is amazing. My stepson is already taking sailing lessons :)

    Russian Trawler Update #7 (Final)

@Mako, it was definitely a big project but it was affordable because Russia. But yes, I am likely going to give it up. The big challenge was the storeroom full of Victron AGMs, inverter/charger, transducers, bilge pumps and other things that I was stockpiling for the last year. Its a crap-ton...

    Russian Trawler Update #7 (Final)

For Russians it is complicated. Most of my friends see the history of the relationship with Ukraine as a grey situation versus black and white. That being said, they know their government lies to them, they have access to the internet, so they see the truth. Most want to or are leaving...

    Russian Trawler Update #7 (Final)

It needs a new hull, which is getting less expensive by the day :) and to have new prop shaft installed and engine recommissioned. None of which is a showstopper. The big problem is it is very unlikely Russia would clear it out of customs and equally unlikely Finland or Estonia would clear...

    Russian Trawler Update #7 (Final)

Hey guys, Thanks for all the kind words. We are settling in to life in Porto. its wonderful and we are incredibly thankful to all the help we've received. We are still paying for the boat's storage while we figure out what to do. I would prefer to stop having economic ties of any kind to...

    Russian Trawler Update #7 (Final)

Hey guys, Wanted to close the thread here. We have fled to Portugal and abandoned our boat (apartment, car, life, etc). It was simply time to go. Once we are settled we hope to find another boat and try again someday. Tough times and completely useless. Our thoughts are with those more...

    Planning a long hop

I was thinking about that quote a lot reading this thread..."A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for"

    Planning a long hop

There is a lot of great advice and information in this thread. It sounds like Ksanders is getting ready for an adventure! I am safety minded generally, especially when other people are involved. I tend to err on the side of safety. Having said that, reading this thread, I believe there has...

What’s your favorite YouTube channels on trawlers and maritime issues

Here are mine... https://www.youtube.com/c/SailingYachtZora Irish guy successfully resurrects an old steel sailboat and recently sailed it to Spain and Portugal https://www.youtube.com/c/svdelos Sailing. Tech savy guy, wife, kid and some guests. Fun and well shot, but not for everyone...

release the nautical masses from nautical terms

The thing that is odd about this thread is that it seems a bit like the OP is trying to make excuses for their personal ignorance or laziness and normalize a lower standard (pardon the assumption). To be honest, run your boat however you like. Who cares? You want to insist that your boat...

Where is no go for this?

    That's great info! Thanks!

release the nautical masses from nautical terms

Holy moly this thread is a train wreck. I can only say that I would not want some of the posters in this thread anywhere near me in an emergency. I haven't encountered any nautical terms, just like I didn't encounter many specific terms in the military or other areas of my life; that were...

    Russian Trawler Update #6

Yeah, that part is a real kick in the gibblies. But we learnt a lot during that time and have some stories to tell. Trying to paint steel with epoxy at -23C is an adventure :) I want to replace the ballast with something more consistent anyway. Preferably something I can run cables through...

    Russian Trawler Update #6

Here is a video of a boat undergoing the process. Skip to about the ten minute mark. The yard I am in is a bit nicer, but the process is the same, more or less:

TIG welder onboard - pulled the trigger

In Russia you buy bottles and have them filled. That's part of why I don't want to deal with it.

TIG welder onboard - pulled the trigger

Hey Simi, Did you get a full-size bottle? Trying to decide if I want to go TIG on the boat, but the gas bottle is a big negative...curious how you are dealing with that

    Russian Trawler Update #6

Blue - the guys at the yard recommended rolling chocks. Said it is no problem to add them when they do the bottom. It had some before, but they were removed at some point (weld lines still visible). Also plan to extend the keel a bit. They said that is something they've done on SSPs before...

    Russian Trawler Update #6

Hi Bluewater - Yes, she was a fishing trawler for most of her life. Here is a pic of one of the type in standard configuration. Ours has been significantly modified forward of the pilot house. I am not sure why so narrow. As you mentioned, maybe its an environmental consideration? Ice...

    Russian Trawler Update #6

You piqued my curiosity, so I did a bit of googling. According to what I found, 3:1 is generally considered ideal in most boats, especially displacement trawlers. She's exactly 4:1. A bit more on the sailboat side of the ratio; this allows her to be more efficient, it seems. I did read...
