Key largo / Buttonwood sound today?

Saw what appeared to be a krogen 44 heading N through Buttonwood Sound earlier today. Anyone from this site?

    General docking question

I would hope there is some sort of legality that could be applied against that marina along the lines of them preventing tenants from having ready access/use of their boat.

    General docking question

Obviously no lines are stopping it from going further into the slip; just the fenders. Its not been much of an issue, just a worry. Just the same, lease end will be a welcome time.

    General docking question

Not all slips are setup this way. But when we had a straight shot in, I didnt mind much. Midship and aft cleats (all the way into the slip). So stern lines to opposite corner cleats, and midship to stern cleats. Fenders or course.

    General docking question

Cant change slips w/o paying a change fee, which is BS since they added the dock behind me w/o notice, but theres nothing I can do about it other than leave the marina after the annual lease is up. I can dock it, its just a PITA compared to when we had a straight run into the slip. Regarding...

    Seen that many times. Impressive!

    General docking question

Thanks. I found out this spring that my marina put a new dock behind ours, and I've had a hell of a time getting into and out of the slip all year. Measured the fairway this weekend and its 1.75 boat length. And of course, the wind is always blowing in Texas. Even with the bow into the wind...

    General docking question

And to further specify, single screw no thrusters.

    General docking question

Let me rephrase; what is the narrowest fairway you would be comfortable navigating, as compared to your vessel's length?

    General docking question

In the marina setup with a fairway running vertically and slips to port and starboard perpendicular to the fairway, how wide (in relation to the slip length) should the fairway be to allow for proper maneuvering? Example, slips to both port and starboard are 35' long, and have floating concrete...

Inlet / bar crossing in a trawler?

Thanks for the quick reply guys. Could an opposing current ever exceed your max hull speed, causing reverse progress? As an example, I've seen some videos of haulover and not sure an 8knot tank could overcome that current? So that would be a wait it out situation.

Inlet / bar crossing in a trawler?

How does one hit an inlet or cross a bar in a big low speed trawler when the current is ripping? Wait for the the tide to settle, or just let the full displacement weight take the brunt of the waves and course correct as best you can? I presume the former, but figured I'd ask the pros. Thanks

Yanmar 4LHA-STP aftercooler service in place

If you have frozen bolts I suspect the core will be in there good and tight too. But yes, you can do as you stated, if you can do as you stated ;) Disclaimer; I never worked on that model, but the other Yanmars on which I have came apart that way.

    Tax implications

Point taken, but on the flip side of that why pay more taxes than you have to? I'm not trying to live my boating life to micromanage tax costs, but I'm also willing to take advantage of any and all legal actions to reduce the up-front tax burden. Its like filing taxes; Some people go to H&R...

    Tax implications

If i'm reading that right an owner would pay sales tax upon initial purchase, and then use/personal tax for each state in which he spends more than the state's allotted time? Sounds like a never ending tax burden if you want to visit the country via water.

    Tax implications

I think this will require a maritime tax attorney and a cpa.

    Tax implications

I'm not a lawbreaker, was just curious how they would find out. Never saw such a thing on Lake Erie. Also, I am formally renouncing my intent to do the great loop. Specifically, stopping in FL. ;)

    Tax implications

Well, we hope to boat all over; Great loop then who knows where. So if buying a boat in one state saves taxes, why not take advantage of that? Regarding the FL tax, when does that kick in? If we are TX residents and our boat is registered in TX, is there a time period we have to be in FL before...

    Tax implications

When purchasing a vessel with a price tag north of a few 100k, are there 'strategies' that can be used to avoid certain taxes? I presume that buying in a state with no sales tax is one way, but what happens when you go back to your home state and register the vessel? Surely you'll get hit...

    Howdy

Just wanted to say hello. I am an engineer and perpetual planner, and since my wife and I are planning on tackling The Great Loop when we retire (10 years out from trawler purchase), I wanted to start compiling info now. I know 10 years is a long ways off, but with kiddos, work and other...
