Cure for Yanmar diesel engine smoke?

My boat with 370 Cummins 6BT smoked a fair bit when starting cold, neither engine smokes when under way. During the winter I have pan heaters, even though it really doesn't get very cold here in San Diego. The pan heaters helped the smoke on startup during the winter. I do run both engines at...

    Mckinna 58 with Cats (3406)

A good friend a had a 2005 McKinna 481 and I spent a bit of time on it. It struck me as a good quality boat, similar to Ocean Alexander. He had no build issues with it. I imagine the 58 is similar. The boat didn't handle a following sea very well per my friend, and it was a bit...

Need recommendation for engine replacement near Anacortes, WA.

Can you get the engine onto the deck where it can be picked by a crane with no overhead? If so, pulling it while in the water by towing it to a yard with a crane or potentially using a travel lift with a crane attachment.

    Help choosing 15hp dingy motor

Before I built a flush adapter for my 8hp Johnson I used to tie a 5 gallon bucket up around it and to the flush that way. Kind of hokey but it worked. If you have a flush adapter then just hook it up to your fresh water washdown and it will work fine.

    The story of Joshua Slocum

Sorry, I should have been more clear in my post, I meant the two books by Dana Lamb.

    The story of Joshua Slocum

I think I've read most of the suggestions here, but added a couple to my Amazon cart. These adventure stories at sea always interest me more than any other type of book. A couple more that I really enjoyed were the classic Two Years Before the Mast by Richard Henry Dana and two by Dana Lamb...

What's the current 'state of the art' on bilge monitoring?

This would be a simple and fun project for an Arduino if you are so inclined to DIY.

    Non Skid is Non Clean

Try using a heavy rubbing compound and hard bristle brush in a small area. If you make progress, I've had success using one of these on my heavy duty rotary buffer. They come in different stiffness bristles...

Here is a great hint for working on Caterpillar heat exchangers and after coolers

Probably not if it's behind the gasket, but a SS would be a much better part. And I just can't bring myself to pay these crazy prices for something so simple and in some ways inferior.

Here is a great hint for working on Caterpillar heat exchangers and after coolers

If that ever happens again to one of those frame I expect you could have a stainless one waterjet cut for 1/2 the price that would never break again.

    Questions on power systems

Welcome! You will probably generate a lot of opinions with these questions, but I'll take a shot a a couple of them. Boats with a single level per engine are like an outboard as you guessed, where they move to the first detent and engage forward or reverse and then from there add throttle...

    advice for new boater

If your 2WD truck has a limited slip rear end you will be fine on most all but the slimiest ramp at low tide. My previous boat was a Shamrock 26 and I originally had a 2WD Duramax to tow it with. Carry a tow strap and if there is an issue you will likely find someone ready to give you a tug to...

    Yanmar 6LP-STE Valves

How many hours on the engines? These are generally considered good engines, but that engine and year may have been subject to some valve seal issues along with the mentioned valve lock spring. The update to the lock spring was to prevent a catastrophic valve drop occurrence. I'm not sure if...

    Interesting boats

That is a very unique and somewhat odd boat. I wonder about how the connection between the FRP deck and aluminum hull and deck house is done? It's hard to imagine that could be managed to compensate for the wide difference in thermal expansion between the two materials. Also, how do you...

    My dripless shaft is leaking

It already looks pretty compressed to me, but it's a bit hard to tell from that angle. As Comodave said, they can lose elasticity and then will need to be replaced. Other things noted which cause leaks are dirt on the faces, sometimes it's a simple as pulling the bellows back and flushing it...

    Stuffing box

I don't see how this could be a shaft issue. If it were bad enough to cause rubbing on inside of the stuffing box you would see it when it's running. Has the stuffing box been checked to be concentric with the shaft? Just something to remember that if the shaft turns freely at the dock it may...

Entec Genset with attached hydraulic pump backup propulsion system

I think we all would be interested in how well the system works. For a 38' boat I wouldn't think it would move along very well, especially against wind or current. That looks to be a fairly small pump and I would guess the engine driving the generator is only 15hp-ish.

    insuring a trawler cruising trawler

We have had great service by Douglas K. Smith in San Diego. They also insure a few friends boats in San Diego and have a good reputation. They are a broker but represent Travelers whom we've found to be very competitive in our market. Beth Chavét-Oberg President/Agent- Douglas K. Smith...

    Interesting boats

I've admired this boat as we pass it often at the dock. It's at SDYC or SWYC, can't remember which. Inside is a bit cave-like which I suppose is due to it's origin as an expedition boat but very cool from the outside.

    Engine Oscillations

Good advice from Greg above. Also, check for a sticky cable or loose fitting which secures the cable sheath or end fittings. If there is a lubrication maintenance on the lead screw of the motors, perform that and see if it improves.

    Canvas cost question

Not sure where you are located since geography matters, but the going rate for a full bimini enclosure with poly/acrylic panels for a boat of that size including SS tubing for support would be in the $15-17K range for top quality in Southern California.

    Turbo oil leak

Looks like you are due for a rebuild. If you are handy you can rebuild it yourself. Parts are in the $130 range for a full kit. You must keep careful note of alignment of all the rotating assembly parts or risk it coming apart at high speed. I did both mine a couple years ago on 6BTA engines...

    Fixing Holding Tank Fitting

I'm presuming this is a rotomolded polyethylene tank. I would try cutting the old one off and shaving it down flat. Then bond on a flange such as this https://alscoplastics.com/products/gf-pvc-80-threaded-flange with 5200 and some 316 SS Plastite screws (available through McMaster Carr. 5200...
