Do Any of You Freshwater Flush Your Engine?

I've got an update on this... From my previous test where I did flushing of the raw water on both engines with the seacock open I surmised that the pump flow was still pulling in a significant amount of salt water. As such, the flushing wasn't effective (and zinc anode erosion was similar to...

Zincs get stuck in the coolers

Sealing the gap between the anode and the bronze/brass cap is the trick to preventing them from falling out. Rector seal or I use a small amount of RTV right at the base between the two to seal the threads and prevent corrosion. They come out clean every time now.

    Custom fiberglass bimini fabricators?

I think for that sized boat you will want/need a sandwich structure as a single layer (of multiple layers) will get pretty heavy spanning that distance. Fabrication will likely mean making a simple mold for it as well to get the proper curve and a good gelcoat finish on the top. Unfortunately I...

    Interesting boats

I bought a Mastercraft ski boat about 15 years ago on ebay. Well, kind of bought it through ebay. I bid on it but didn't win it due to being under the reserve. I ended up contacting the guy after the sale and gave him a bit more to get to his asking price. The boat was a cream puff and...

Well, maybe I didn't do this right or my deodorant isn't working. Anyway, I've only had one response so it looks like this isn't going to happen unfortunately. Maybe try again next year....

    Volt meter

My guess is the needle has slipped on the shaft. But this is easy to sort out with a DVM as suggested.

Ok, bringing this back up to see if people can make either May 13th or the 20th. Feel free to PM me with your preference. More details once we get a date set. Ken, I will be in touch so we can see if it's possible to get some time at SWYC.

Looking for Aftercooler for Cummins 6CTA

If you can’t wait a good machine shop could cut a bore in the housing and bond in an aluminum sleeve. Not ideal but I would think it would last a couple years or at least until the next service or you can get a new one. Bond the sleeve in with JB weld or other suitable epoxy with a few...

    Discover MS Passi

Looks fantastic, both the boat and how you are using it. You would never know the boat is 25 years old from the pictures.

40-45 ft convertible sport fishing boat

Riviera would be my suggestion for SoCal use. What boat did you look at which was cored below the waterline? To my knowledge Riviera is solid below the waterline. You might have to consider buying on the East Coast and shipping it as the market out here is pretty slim.

    Heat exchanger corrosion?

Using Permatex or Rectorseal makes good sense, but any grease on these can lead to the gasket slipping out and causing a leak. Ask me how I know....

    Heat reduction using window film?

As long as the polarization film is in the same orientation it will not totally block the light/view. But, if you run the film 90 degrees to one another across the two windows it will. The only reason to run polarized film is if you are looking to cut reflections off the surface of the water...

Pettit Prop Coat Barnacle Barrier 1792

I think most folks just use Rustoleum cold galvanizing spray, it's the same stuff and available from any hardware store for less than $10 a can.

    Jetski on swim platform

I'm with Comdave on this. Build a platform which sets on the swim step and has rollers on one end. You can add an inexpensive trailer winch from Harbor Freight on the opposite end which can be removed once it's loaded.

Electrical precautions while attaching bonding wires?

For good measure, put some dielectric grease between all connections. I use bare terminals and coat the wire before crimping with grease, then put an overall adhesive lined heat shrink over which prevents water from wicking up the wire.

Trying to purchase a boat is a joke!!

This is excellent advice. Storage of a boat on the hard in Anacortes is pretty reasonable and available. Our boat was stored that way and I can tell you that during the winter I was happy to not be on the water and be in my home in SoCal. If a nice weather window opens up at some point, take...

Dear Diary - Weebles will splash soon.

FWIW, I resealed the glass in one of my TaylorMade hatches. I removed the glass and all traces of sealant from the glass and frame, then cleaned thoroughly with Acetone. I bedded the glass down on a layer of thin black butyl tape, I think it was 1/16". Then masked off the frame and glass and...

    Exhaust hose questions

Looks like a Salisbury muffler, not very common these days. As others have stated, the splice to it is not Kosher. I would probably put a Vernatone FG muffler in it's place with longer runs of FG tubing as possible. I played around with these on my last boat and they really quieted down the...

Hello there! I have a question about a trawler

I saw that video and gulped too. I don't think what they had done was worth what they paid for it. It was $66K US which to me is bordering on a completely new engine cost, not a rebuild.

Sounds like we have a bit of interest here. Since we have some larger boats I agree rafting might not be the best idea. I would be up for rafting up to a max of three boats of similar size to mine (36'), but if folks want to anchor and dinghy around that works too. La Playa is probably the...
