I am still looking, while I wait forever for my Miami house to sell, as the last thing I want is to end up with a house and a big boat. I saw a 60' De Fever that looks very nice, but I do not know much about these boats. Any savvy advise on how it compares wit Nhvn and KK? Many Tks.

    Gloss versus Matte Varnish finish

I speak as a woodworker, not as boat owner. In furniture, we never varnish teak. Even glueing teak is quite difficult, and one has to previously use acetone to remove the local oil. I never had a boat that had teak other than in decks, so I humbly admit I am not an authority in the use of teak...

I went to see the Chopin, a 60' Nordhavn, and I loved it. I also have my eyes on the Ithaca, but to this moment I don't know were it is, to go visit. Like in buying a house, my budget keeps stretching.

    Gloss versus Matte Varnish finish

Teak is traditionally never varnished. The simple reason is, it contains too much oil and no good finish will attach well. I would use the soapy Murphy oil on floors, and an oil or clear stain in vertical surfaces. Now veneered surfaces would not have the large amount of oil, as it dries...

    Tip The Tow?

I am sorry, my mistake, the coin trowing occurrence was in Paris, not England.

    Tip The Tow?

It is all a matter of culture. In japan, if you try to tip anyone for any service, he will return the money and even be offended. In England, if you undertip a taxi driver, he will curse you and may even trow the coins at you, like it happened me. In most of Europe, a 10% restaurant tip is...

What do you cruisers do with important papers?

I think that a Pelican case would be a better solution for something you want to protect from water immersion. Like this: Waterproof Storm hard cases | Pelican Professional

    USCG license renewal

In Brazil no-one can be found on the helm of a power boat unless is less than 5 meters long and has an engine of less than 4.5 kw without a proper license. There are 4 types of recreational licenses: one specific for Jet-skis, one for Inland and bays, a higher one for coastal waters (called...

How about Caribbean countries, anyone has information?

    Well, I was hoping.....

Most galvanic isolators are just hefty diode bridges, if they shorten, nothing will tell you unless the device has a sensing circuit. So it must be checked if you observe too much corrosion. If a one volt DC current goes through, it is faulty.

Ah! That pretty much explains why Miami waters is so full of crazy boaters that not even understand basic preference rules.

    USCG license renewal

I found the checklists here Checklist What I do not understand well is, were are the requirements for amateur boaters. I hold a Brazilian Masters license, without which one cannot pilot any boat in the country's coastal waters, but I don't see anything similar in the complex list of US licenses.

Electrics in Brazil are same as US, not Europe. The boat will be docked in the US, so it is best to find a stateside boat I think. A trip to Brazil, maybe one in a lifetime, and the boat can only stay for 6 months, lest I would have o pay import duties. Besides, Brazil is not a boater's...

    Well, I was hoping.....

After reading all posts in this thread, I decided that my knowledge of boat corrosion was insufficient. I spent a few hours reading many texts in the internet. My training in Chemical Engineering gave me a good basis to understand even the most technical of the papers, though the electric part...

    Well, I was hoping.....

My humble opinion: 1) "Old" boat will never ever be in pristine mechanical condition, no matter what the seller tells you; I doubt it that any owner of an used boat knows what and when will fail, he can only validate to the best of his knowledge, that can be very good or poor. It is a fact...

    Powdercoat or Galvanise?

One idea would be not galvanising, but metalling, that is cover with a spray of molten zinc or aluminum, such as they do in steel hulls. It is a lot easier than finding a big enough galvanising vat, and probably less expensive.

    Well, I was hoping.....

I don't know if this is you case. In my experience, a boat that is docked always to the same side, gets a lot more electrolytic corrosion on that dock side. It appears that stray currents from that side are frequently much stronger than at the sea side. This is more evident on boats that are...

Thanks for the very good insight. I never had a Tiara, if it was me it had to be either a Scout 30 or a Boston Whaler 32.

Very good advices. I will hire a Broker and I will look everywhere, even NZ and AUS. I can always hire an experienced captain to do the crossing with me. Traveling to look up boats is just what I need.

One of my problems will be: within that budget, do I go for newest or biggest? Like, I can get a pretty recent KK55 or a much older N65. I notice that the newest boats, most have active stabilisers and Bow & Stern thrusters, and a lot of older boats do not; since I probably will want the two...
