    Inspecting/reviving 2-year dormant lehman 120 (locked up?)

I had sea water in the number six cylinder in BOTH my engines. This was about 15 years ago in a 1979 GB 42 with twin FL 120s. Boat was on. mooring in a busy port with large ferries going less than 50 metres away. It happened to one engine first and as I had it fixed it happened to the other. I...

    Rats!

I had one in my boat a few years ago. A real pain. Chewed though a couple of plastic water lines and nibbled at teak furniture. Got rid of the critter by laying several traps and sticky pads. The bugger got caught by a trap and then adhered to a sticky pad as well. (I humanely drove over it.)...

    Remove flybridge, add solar

I used butyl roofing tape on top of the joints and that keeps the rain out. Two lessons learned: - Install the tape before raising the roof in place. It is a lot easier than doing it after it is place! (ask me why I know ...) - Use the the best quality of tape available to avoid the edges...

    Remove flybridge, add solar

Well, the panels sit within a structure of welded aluminum rectangular tubes. The panels are more like the canvas of the Bimini, but actually at a lower cost than Sunbrella!

Tinting Strips for flybridge Lower shield?

Yeah, glare on the water is a problem. While tinting will cut down some of the glare it also cuts down general visibility. What I have always found works really well to eliminate glare are polarised sunglasses.

Tinting Strips for flybridge Lower shield?

I do not believe the tinting material was original. All the flying bridge windshields in GBs I have seen in old catalogues have been clear plastic. I believe they were acrylic but polycarbonate is also used in replacements. While common in windshield replacements in GBs I see little value in...

    Pulling a Boston Whaler?

Good tips. I use three fenders from the mother-ship and less than that would be inadequate. When you connect the springs to the mid-point cleat do you also tie the bow of the tender somehow?

    Pulling a Boston Whaler?

I have towed a 13' Whaler for years. While at anchor, and when I need to tie to a dock side-to, I tie the Boston Whaler "on the hip" of the mother-ship. I use spring lines to the front and the back of the mother-ship attached to the hand-rail in the inside corner of the bow-rail and a stern...

    Paint for teak rails.

They were factory painted, at least based on the old "Spray" magazines and brochures I have seen. Having said that, a 1979 GB 42 I owned had the side-window frames bare of paint (and the hand-rails bare of varnish) when I bought it. There was no sign of paint on the frames so I suspected they...

Vexed header tank on older FL 120

Around 15 years ago I installed the American Diesel neck conversion and overflow kit in my earlier 1979 GB42 with twin FL 120s. I really don't remember the details but didn't find the work particularly difficult. Given that overheating is one of the very few things that can damage a diesel...

Looking for ideas on affixing / fasten appliances and furniture for cruising

I couldn't find it before but her is the turn-button design I have in a couple of my saloon cabinets. They work really well: they turn freely and swing into place automatically under gravity.

    Grand Banks 52 Alaskan

Here is the layout for the three-stateroom version. In my, four-stateroom version, a small double-bunk stateroom is hived-out of the the massive master stateroom by sacrificing the ridicously large "wardrobe lockers". (The master stateroom's head has a tub, also ridiculous and useless when...

    Grand Banks 52 Alaskan

Yes, take it out every two or three years for anti-fouling. Diver cleans bottom in-between. Best to limit the time out and keep the hull shaded and wet, if possible. My boat once spent the winter on the hard in Greece. When it went back in the water it was held-up in the travelift slings...

    Grand Banks 52 Alaskan

It is. I have three grown children, all with partners, and comfortably fit. We will often spend three or four weeks cruising without having to reprovision. It has three full size decks, four staterooms and three heads! It is a bit top-heavy so lot's of tacking when the swells are on the...

    Grand Banks 52 Alaskan

Having owned two of them and knowing other owners, I can say Grand Banks were very well built, possibly better than others of it class and era. Below is a fastener I removed when changing a stop-water a few years ago in my 50 year-old wooden Grand Banks. I also checked others and they were in...

How to anchor for a week?

I think you mentioned you use the genny to cook. Switching to propane would reduce that need. Switching all lights to LED is a must. The fridge and the freezer, after the range, are the big energy hogs. Are they 12V DC or 110V AC? DC ones are probably more efficient. Are they air cooled or...

    Favorite Nautical Movies

That was my experience too. But, according to Wikipedia, it: - had 5 Oscar-winning actors - was itself nominated for 8 Oscars, winning 2 - was the highest grossing film in 1973 Who would have thought it! The five Oscar winners were Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Jack Albertson, Shelley...

How to anchor for a week?

An alternative to reading books is listening to audiobooks. I spend an hour or two a day doing it, usually while walking the dog. I don’t know if that might work for you. I have been a subscriber to audible.com, now owned by Amazon, for many years. They have huge catalogue and is very easy to...

I think the power of these natural language programs will peter-out. They learn by reading stuff but they will soon have read everything there is to read.

Chipped veneer repair on doors and galley surfaces

I second what posts #2 and #5 say. Looks better than the original because of the contrast and it is lighter in color. Keep in mind there is nothing noble about veneer. Solid teak I would make an effort to keep varnished but veneer is fake wood so I have no problem painting it.
