Has anyone rebuilt there twin ford lemans in a Grand Banks 36 in the boat?

FWIW, a mechanic replaced the no. 6 pistons in my twin FL 120s on a GB 42 while on the water.

Wet exhaust tail pipe flappers…pros and cons?

I used fibre glass insulation wrap for motor cycle exhaust and metal "cable ties" to hold it in place. There are fancier insulation solutions as well.

Wet exhaust tail pipe flappers…pros and cons?

It was a standard water-lift muffler system for the 120 hp Ford-Lehmans with the stock exhaust elbow. Where it was moored, there was regular boat traffic, including large ferries, cargo ships and even cruise ships. Because my boat was on a swinging mooring the stern could be exposed to the...

Wet exhaust tail pipe flappers…pros and cons?

When I read the post on the Manatee repowering I also thought of exhaust flaps. If the stern of a docked boat is exposed to waves for whatever reason I think flaps are useful. If I recall correctly Dave Gerr recommends them in his "Boat Mechanical Systems Handbook". In my previous boat, a...

    Battery charger always on?

Most newer charger are "intelligent" and will go through a bulk-absorption-float charging cycle. When they get to "float" they can remain at that level indefinitely. You need to confirm that your charger does this. The manual will say it. If so, you can leave it on all the time. But you...

    Sanding teak trim

Yep, what they say. Do not remove the trim and use a heat gun to remove the old varnish.

Owning a 40 foot trawler with no generator?

I actually removed a working but ancient generator from my boat and replaced it with solar panels. You need to work out the energy budget for your boat. In my case I manage well with: - 6 panels x 330 W for a total nominal power of close to 2 kW - replaced electric stove with propane and...

    New to solar

That's how mine are connected. I have two DC panels: one at the helm and one below near the engine rooms. The two DC panels are connected by thick cables, possibly 2/0. The controller connects to the helm DC panel. I don't know if it has been mentioned but installing a circuit breaker, or at...

36 Classic VS 36 Heritage Classic

I don't think the models necessarilly changed when the "Heritage" badge was introduced. I think it was introduced at some point before 2005 simply to distinguish the existing traditional Grand Banks models from the Aleutians and Eastbays. There were some redesigns of the 36 and 42 and maybe...

36 Classic VS 36 Heritage Classic

I think Grand Banks came-up with the "Heritage" badge when they launched the Aleutian and Eastbay lines and grouped the traditional models under it. Here is a capture of their website from 2006:

    Heat pump combo washer/dryer

As a mechanical engineer student, I specialised in HVAC, and when I first heard of heat-pump dryers I immediately recognized them as a very elegant solution. Heat-pump dryers are much more energy efficient than other electrical dryers. According to the UK's Which magazine they consume a third...

What is the long thing attached to the hull?

When I bought my current boat it had an external heat exchanger for the fridge/freezer, but it was not as long.

    Grounding Video

I have also left my boat unattended in a restaurant mooring ball for lunch but certainly would not do it with these swells on a lee shore. They swam ashore because the swells were too large to use the dinghy  (Screen shot from video during salvage operation which, I believe, was the...

    Boats you would buy again.

I have liked all my boats. In fact I like most boats! I have had two Boston Whaler 13', two Apreamare and two Grand Banks. I only had one Sunfish but it was special as it was my first boat.

    Scratches on swim platform

I would first try rubbing compound. If that doesn't do it, try sanding it by hand with fine grit and a gentle touch following the curves. The dark stuff may wash-off with soap or solvent. With a power tool it will be hard to end-up with a fair curve plus you are likely to go below the gelcoat.

    Refinish Salon Floor

If you need to remove existing varnish you can do it with a heat-gum and a scraper. A lot easier and quicker than sanding and less messy than a stripper.

Walker Bay dinghy for MS 390?

Before you start spending money on davits you might try-out the Walker Bay first. The 8’ model weighs only 71 lbs. and you should be able to manhandle it on to the swim platform where you can stand it on the side or even on the stern and then tie in place with a line or two. BTW, given their...

    Wind Generator

I have seen several GB classics with a radar post at rear of the fly-bridge, on the port-side corner. Not sure how they are supported. You could place it on the roof of the rear cabin and attach to the lip of the fly-bridge, like the Nick Jackson pipe davits are attached. But, like others...

Need Guidance on Choosing a Boat Please

Before buying my first trawler I had a 30' planning boat, a 9m Apreamare. While planning, it was very stable. But if the chop increased beyond 3 or 4 feet I would need to slow down and the rock-and-roll would begin. So, not a big advantage over a trawler that is also pretty stable when the...
