Living on a Grand Banks 42 Classic for the Summer

I spent several summers on my GB 42 Classic with my wife and three kids. We would cruise the Balearic islands in Spain for 2 to 3 months each summer. We also had friends visit us during the day for lunch & sundowners. The boat is very spacious and it is easy to spread-out amongst its several...

I didn’t get an answer either when I emailed them a couple of years ago. I later built plywood ones.

    Stabilizers Grand Banks Classic

I have had a good experience with them. My flopper-stoppers are 35cm x 100cm, sitting out on 4m poles. They don't stop all motion but certainly attenuate it and make boat conformable in most conditions we encounter at anchor. (I had a steadying sail in a GB42 but it didn't do much so I never...

    Your thought folks

My most valued modifications have been: replaced Bimini with hard-top and 2 kW of solar panels (together with switch to propane stove this permitted removal of ancient generator) removed fly-bridge faux-chimney and added a table and bench seat where up to eight can conformably sit under new...

    Troubleshooting loud squeak on Cummins6BT

I had a similar experience with two rebuilt 6B 5.9 Cummins. One of the belts squeaked. I changed the belt and the squeak continued. The rebuild-shop suggested tightening the belts by replacing the lower support for the alternators (see photo below) with a slightly longer one. Although I...

A dearth of trawlers in the Adriatic and Ionian

I think weather is a big factor. A differentiating feature of Trawlers is their relatively large and confortable indoor space which makes them more suitable for different weather conditions: rain or shine. In the Med virtually all the boating happens in the summer and, as it is hot and dry...

Thank You for having me. Ramblin Rose 49 Grand Banks.

Wellcome! Nice boat. I hadn't seen a GB49 with the "Classic" layout, only the "Motoryacht" layout with the full-width stern cabin. Having had a GB42 with the Classic layout I think I prefer it.

    My confidence is being effected.

When I was experiencing a loss of confidence on my 1973 boat a few years ago I decided to simplify it. As a result I have removed: - three A/C units (two weren't working) - Webasto diesel boiler and nine radiators - 12 kW Onan generator (replaced with 2 kW of solar panels) - electric range...

    Interior Wood Replacement...

I find repairing veneer very difficult. Depending on how deteriorated yours is you might consider using wood putty for filling-in as needed and then simply painting over with regular paint. While I would hesitate at painting furniture or any solid teak I have no compucture with painting over...

    1972 GB36 teak decks, need to repair,refurbish

    1972 GB36 teak decks, need to repair,refurbish

This is from an old 2002 post by Bob Lowe in the now-defunct Grand Banks Forum: "Over the years, I have used many methods and tools to accomplish cleaning out the old seams, regrooving and reseaming teak decks. If the deck seams are deep enough but are loose at the sides to the teak and...

    What's inside a Europa roof?

My boat is older and is a wooden. The ceiling of the side decks are plywood with no wooden beams. The wooden beams end at the side of the house except in the cockpit where they span the full beam. Even though my boat is wooden, the top surface of flybridge is covered in fibreglass (and...

    Ford Lehman 120 seized piston

It is the lowest cylinder and the closest to the exhaust elbow. So it is the first cylinder to suffer any raw-water intrusion issues. I would guess it is a problem not limited to FL 120s. But on the FL 120s, don't know if it the case with other engines, the exhaust elbow also closes-off the...

    Paint

I have used this mixed-in two-part paint on my fly-bridge: https://www.international-yachtpaint.com/en/gb/boat-paint-products/topcoat-finishes/non-slip-additive I think it works well. Not too rough but not slippery, and easy to clean. There may be an Interlux equivalent in the US.

    Grand Banks electric range

My earlier boat, a 1979 GB 42, also had a copper line from the gas range to the flybridge seat. I believe it was original. It had a manual valve which you can see in the photograph below. If you have one you might consider eliminating it and adding a solenoid valve at the tank.

    Tecma Head Solenoid

The problem could also be the wiring or a fuse. You can test the solenoid by applying 12 volts to it and see if it works or not. If it still does not, as mentioned above, it could be stuck from sediments or corrosion. You can try to take it apart or tap it to see if it loosens up. Good luck!

Daily salt water rinse on teak deck?

Keeping decks moist swells the wood, which is good, although teak, together with mahogany, are amongst the most dimensionally-stable of woods. But I wonder if seawater really helps teak from drying and shrinking as salt will draw water away from the wood. I have seen one case of teak rotting...
