Heads up for the Rideau 2024 season

I don't think this has any major impact on canal operations. The vast majority of traffic on the waterway is either local or easily able to get under the bridge. I've been on the Rideau for a couple of weeks, and have seen a few trawlers come by, having dropped their biminis to get through...

Trigger for series parallel relay operation

My boat came with a relay on a switch. To use the thruster the switch had to be on. When I went to a dedicated bank I got rid of that in favor of two batteries wired in series and charged from house with a 24v dc-dc charger That's a big thruster, 5.7 kw. Usually a dedicated bank is a better...

Bow Thruster Choice Vetus vs SidePower?

I have a Vetus 9512 from 2006. Boat has ~5k hours. After erratic recent behavior, I removed the motor, took it to a local alternator shop, and got a complete rebuild with about ten days turnaround time. No issues getting replacement brushes, bearings and relay. the rebuild cost less than 50%...

Tennessee to Lake Michigan- Mississippi Upriver?

I've done it. My blog has a brief account, starting here: Kentucky Lock There isn't much in terms of refuge or fuel. Hoppie's is the only stop between Paducah and Alton. Debris is largely determined by water levels, and more importantly trends. A rising river brings debris off the banks...

    Alternator question

I think with a temperature sensor and external regulator there is no reason not to use the OEM alternator as long as you're not expecting rated output. Adding better regulation is never a negative IMO. If alternator life is a concern you can set a conservative temperature limit and accept the...

Clean shower head now overflows shower sump

No experience with this, but it looks like an elegant solution. That said, I have a similar unit to yours, and if kept clean it works well even with all taps open in shower and head. The box is pretty close to watertight with the lid on, so unless it's always full (i.e. pump or float switch...

Heads up for the Rideau 2024 season

I think your observations would be useful, even with the caveat of changing water levels, which don't change rapidly on the Great Lakes. I see a .06 ft range in reported water levels over the past 7 days on Lake Ontario. I went through the fixed bridge last week. My air draft is about 12 ft...

Three Blade versus four blade propeller

I have swapped between 3 and 4 blade a couple of times. Have one of each for my current single engine boat. At that speed/throttle range I doubt there will be any appreciable difference, all other things equal. Either will do the job. Typically a 3 blade will have more pitch than 4 blade in...

    Willard 50

I have a sister ship. Mine has served me well in 3.5 years of ownership. Congratulations and good luck with the survey. That looks like a really nice conversion job. I can't think of anything in particular to watch for.

Borg Warner makes a "klonk" sound when it goes in to reverse.

I just had a look at the Autoprop web site and they say the blades turn through 180 degrees. Autoprop - Bruntons Propellers Again, not specific to Brunton, but in my experience well used feathering props can wear and get sloppy. Hard to tell from your description whether yours is operating...

Borg Warner makes a "klonk" sound when it goes in to reverse.

Agreed. I'd bet that if you get the boat moving in reverse and then shift into forward you'd experience a similar clunk. I don't think I've driven a boat with a Brunton prop, but with other feathering props like the Max Prop this is quite noticable. ETA: if you shift to neutral long enough...

    Looking at a 1980 34 mainship

I had a '78 with a Cummins BTA, and generally ran slow - 7 knots or so - to get good FE. Just dug out my log from doing the Loop on that boat a few years ago, Distance: 5,815 NM Motor hours: 893 Generator hours: 299 Fuel used: 1,523 gallons; 5,757 l GPH: 1.7 MPG: 4.4 I'd suggest that as a...

    Bahamas- Trip Advise

I bought a one year subscription for the electronic version on the Aqua Map app. Money well spent. I recently did a circle tour of the major groups. My favourites were the Exumas, for the sheer natural beauty, and Eleuthera and Cat Island for the relatively unraveled communities. Lots of pics...

An old thread, but this boat passed me today on the AICW. I rarely have boat envy, but this boat really caught my eye. Still for sale.

    Need engine advise

I really doubt that the engine has been flogged on a Mainship 390. Most owners drive them slow. Incidentally the 390 is the most popular boat for loopers. There are a few of them around now that have done 3 or more loops. That's 1000+ hours per trip.

Any experience installing a rotary drive AP on a GB 32?

I'm not familiar with the GB, but have installed a few on sailboats with cable steering. Raymarine offers both rotary and linear drives. Either can be used - either the linear drive attached to the quadrant, or the rotary drive anywhere in the cable system. A linear drive may be easier and...

    GB Stem Thickness

I have a similar arrangement, and added a short length of line as you propose. No further concerns for me. There are lots of snubber arrangements to relieve the windlass or chain end attachment of undue stress.

Lehman 120 rebuild or replace in 2024?

https://marinepowerengine.com/home/91-beta-marine-85t-marine-diesel-engine.html shows new ones in stock at $6,300. That seems very reasonable vs a rebuild. I know what I'd do ?

I think that would be a great choice. Did you price them out?
