    Water Hose from Dock

We refill water tanks with good old SydneyWater supply which has tested as good if not better than bottled so called "spring" water. We use a garden hose kept on a roller hose storage frame, kept onboard. Reckon it`s clean inside by now. We don`t drink it (I would, comfortably, if we had nothing...

    Storm anchoring

We once faced an unexpected strong but brief westerly front while anchored off an sandy beach, with a risk of going onto the beach if the anchor dragged. We had a small 20ft sailboat tied to our stern, they moved off, I started the faithful Lehmans just in case. The anchor held, the front passed...

    Collision and demasting

I`m no psneeld fan/follower as history shows, but in this thread he seems to have asked the reasonable and fair probing questions to get to the nub of what happened, and related experiences in what appears a objective way. Self promotion isn`t helpful, by and large his has been an intelligent...

    Interesting boats

Caballero II`s post seems conclusive. It`s no GB hull but both are SD. The owner`s addition of bilge keels supports your concern about rolling. The absence of GB bow design doesn`t mean the boat won`t go through seas rather than over them, Clipper 40s and my Integrity cut through, both have...

    Interesting boats

Both are generic SD hulls, but look at the stem, the GB is distinctly far more vertical, they do not share hulls. I can`t say whether that`s good or not, but the hull fwd looks more IG than GB. Looking at the chine recesses fwd the hull could have "wave slap", the Chung Hwa owners should know if...

    winterization of washer/dryer

Paulga, seeing pics of multiple areas of the boat while seeking advice on fixes, it looks a nice boat you chose, with good fittings. So congratulations, and it`s good to see you getting advice from experienced TFers.

    Sump Box Strainer

My Island Gypsy 36 had a grey water sump like that, collecting from shower, washbasin and galley sink. The "flipper' switch used to gum up. It had no strainer, yours looks like an added afterthought. Mine had a 2000gpm bilge pump similarly actuated, tested while removed from the sump it fired an...

    Collision and demasting

Good point. A trawler/powerboat under engine power is likely way better able to take avoiding action(though interestingly it doesn`t seemed to have helped the fishing boat any, raising the question "were they looking?". Tacking or gybing a sailboat to change direction is much more of a process.

    Collision and demasting

As the thread appears to be exhausting itself, I wondered what differences if any there might have been in the OP`s experience of the event and the lead up thereto, had the OP been operating a trawler, as was once considered. Exploring that area might be most relevant to TF members who...

Why? Please review the Posting Rules for Harbour Chat.

    Collision and demasting

The fishing boat may be susceptible to criticism, but before judging it on the issue of standing by, it would help to know exactly what the OP said to them about moving away when they attempted to came close ? alongside while there was debris in the water.

    Refueling places in Bass Strait

Coming the other way from Port Philip Bay Melbourne my boat delivery guy refueled at Lakes Entrance. He might have mentioned Wilson`s Prom too but it`s not in my SMS thread with him.

    Collision and demasting

On what I`ve read the fishing boat version would be approached with caution but, to be fair their leaving the scene may stem from a misunderstanding of instructions to move away. Which might well in the circumstances have been given, across the water absent VHF communication, in the direct terms...

    Rocna Vulcan problems

Similar experience with a Super Sarca which has a sliding slot in the shank where the pin of a long shackle is inserted. I solved it with an old style swivel between the "U" shackle and the shackle to attach to the chain, it gets the shackle away from the end of the shank so it can`t foul...

    Boat Ownership Share

In Australia there are private arrangements where 3 or so parties share a boat, many of these people may be friends/acquaintances. Maintenance is likely to be shared informally. AndyG on TF has such an arrangement, of long standing. There are also commercially organized share arrangements for...

Swift Trawler 35 Fiberglass/Gel coat cracking

Was the boat used in extreme conditions? The cracking at corners(?joints) could suggest working. Or excess gelcoat. It`s too widespread to ignore and there is a risk of water penetration damage as well as whatever is going on. Best not approach the mfr empty handed, get an expert report done so...

Swift Trawler 35 Fiberglass/Gel coat cracking

My understanding is the ST42 hull was balsa cored, if so the 35 might be too. Could be important.Maybe have it inspected by someone independent as well as the Beneteau dealer.

    Cruiser instead of Trawler?

While in Melbourne surveying my current boat, I saw a hauled out Bayliner, either a 4588 or 4788, ahem, having minor scattered osmosis repairs. Recall is the hull was essentially SD but became more rounded like FD in the quarters. It seemed interesting, while passing time waiting for the...

    Collision and demasting

Sailboats(called yachts here) here in Australia, especially cruising offshore yachts, commonly fit a radar reflector in the rigging to potentiate reflection.

    Cruiser instead of Trawler?

It`s common for a "sportfish" type boat, like Riviera or Maritimo here mostly used as a recreational "cruiser", to have the swimstep it comes with removed by keen game fisher owners to help backing down while beating up fish.

    Older Windlass

There is a Muir which looks similar but it`s a recent addition to their range of more elongated horizontal models. My guess is it`s not a Muir. No markings on the gypsy?? I expect it operates on freefall controlled by the gypsy brake/lock wheel and is powered retrieve only, which should work...

    Cruiser instead of Trawler?

One reason a sportfish style boat offers more interior room is because the safer walkaround decks of a trawler are incorporated into the interior, "walkaround" becomes "clingaround",using the handholds usually provided.
