Advise: Best company for getting a "6-Pack Captains License".

Totally agree, Peter. This one is 99% internet legend, yet gets repeated forever.

Advise: Best company for getting a "6-Pack Captains License".

2000 ton is well into the category of a serious credential.

    New start batteries

Just for shop talk purposes, I’ll bring up that the choice of start batts is affected by the intended use of the boat. If you use it near civilization and on relatively short trips, just meet the CCA spec and you are probably fine. As a counterpoint, imagine you are in year 4 of your start batts...

    New Boat: Inverter Question

Leaving the inverter on provides clean 120v power to whatever needs it. Some marinas have mediocre power and the voltage sags to a point that is hard on refrigerators etc., so that can be a benefit. Also, leaving the inverter on gives backup power in the event of shore power loss, until the...

    New start batteries

The Lifeline deep cycle 8Ds served you well for 8 years; I would say that is pretty good evidence that they were the correct choice. Our start batts are all Lifeline deep cycles, and I did consider the options when I replaced them (also after 8 years). Two 8Ds is a lot of battery to start a...

    Cap Horn 55

That’s great news. Congratulations! Looking forward to pics and details.

    Mooring line scuff marks

I don’t have the answer to clean your gel coat, but I can suggest using your own dock lines looped through the mooring lines to connect to your boat. That keeps the nasty mooring lines away completely. Sometimes those things have sand and grit in them and can do worse than the black marks.

Liquor on boat going in and out of Canada

The limits, per person, are one bottle of wine or one bottle or one case of beer. That is from memory but pretty close.

Liquor on boat going in and out of Canada

It varies depending on the day, location, and agent, but the general rule we encounter on a cruising boat is that alcohol on board be a reasonable amount for use on the boat on the trip you are undertaking. They can choose to limit you to the allowed max per person (available online). Worst...

I like it. Almost sounds like something Simi 60 would have suggested.

Installing bow thruster, variable speed worth it?

I would say no to the extra $5K, and I have both types. You can use a single speed thruster in bursts and get a similar effect. I’ve yet to see a thruster so powerful that shorts bursts of full power were too much.

    Dealing with "chine slap"

Lots of boats make some noise from some version of chine slap, but it can range from insignificant to unbearable. OP, you are right to do your homework on a boat model that you may be considering. Don’t rule out everything with chines at the bow, but research other owner’s experiences for the...

Realities of seasonal Seattle - San Diego run

It is not something that hardly anyone would choose to repeat annually once they make the run. The miles, cost, weather, time commitment (including unforeseeable weather delays) and lack of good stops make it something most people do only because they have to, and not because they want to. You...

    Attempted Piracy?

Sat phones are dead. Starlink has taken over the sat com market for serious cruisers, including ocean crossings. We carried around an unused sat phone for the first year of our Starlink service and now that phone is gone, along with the KVH hard-mounted phone/data dish in a dome. A very happy...

    Twin Engine Trawler Maneuvering Expectations

You mention that the boat has 4-foot hull extension. Are the props and rudders in the original locations? If so (likely so), that could make the boat less willing to pivot. Hopefully not enough so to be a problem, but worth considering and investigating. Better to know the answer before you...

    San Diego Diesel mechanics

I lean towards the dealer if you don’t have a known alternative. Dependable Marine Inc. is listed as an authorized service provider. The authorized Deere locations have a factory connection that can have a lot of advantages. I don’t know this dealer specifically. I also haven’t found...

Fixing boats in Exotic Places - are new boats really that bad?

Hip, you make some good observations about stick v modular, but the shortcomings are more in the execution than the concept. Either system can include good design and good access to equipment, and modular (done correctly) is a more efficient and consistent method of construction. Low cost...

    Attempted Piracy?

Sounds like you had good reason for concern, and that you have handled it well. Nice job being as prepared as possible for such a situation. Preparation is important to success in most things, and certainly in boating. Stay safe out there.
