    LFP batteries

I always bought my lead acid batteries from a local manufacturer who built for the railroads and commercial fishing fleet. I knew their batteries were built to the highest standards. With LFP, they all come out of China. There is little ability to know which batteries are quality and which...

    Volvo or Yanmar

Saying Yanmar=Toyota is like saying John Deer=Yanmar. Yanmar has marinized a Toyota engine but most Yanmar engines are their own tractor motors mairinized. John Deer uses Yanmar engines in some of their small tractor lines but most the time John Deer uses their own engines.

Generator woes- low compression across all cylinders

I have my reasons for keeping my mouth shut. I believe that twistedtree has very respectable opinions.

Generator woes- low compression across all cylinders

Hi Peter, I am sitting in Anacortes resupplying. Was a wild night last night. Won’t be surprised if you get a bunch of lost anchor claims. Enjoy.

    New Refrigerator

Read the operation manual carefully. I found a hidden requirement for air flow in my current refrigerator’s manual.

Where to buy furniture for trawlers?

Flex steel is a quality RV furniture manufacturer. Out side of them there is not much dedicated to off the shelf marine furniture. I made all my own custom furniture until my boat got large enough to use household furniture.

Issues with a refurb Raymarine C80 -- advice?

Some where on your boat is a DSM-30 or DSM-300. Newer Raymarine units have the DSM built into them.

Surveyor wording is a little harsh

Did you have consequential damages in your policy? This is a clause that Peter at Novamar makes sure is always in his marine policies. If you had consequential damages, your oil cooler would not have been covered but all damages as a result of its failure would have been covered. Home/Auto...

Trawlers - Used Prices and Inventory

Look at the economy. The stock market is strong, this means rich people still feel rich and newer expensive boats are still in demand. Look at the jobs report and retail consumers report. Both are down. This means the middle class is struggling. Older lower end boats have no buyers and...

Issues with a refurb Raymarine C80 -- advice?

First off, the C80 is over 20 years old. Second, refurbished by who? I have purchased three supposedly new A67's off of ebay and everyone of them has had a flaw. This doesn't really Suprise me. The A67 was discontinued over 10 years ago and any new old stock after 10 years is suspicious...

Yachworld "saved search" function - really that useless?

Sadly this is the truth. As others have said, it used to work and then they purposely broke it.

Twin Detroit Diesels 8.2 litre FWC

Detroit Diesel was renowned for the light weight powerful 2 stroke diesel that propelled much of WW2. The 8.2 is a four stroke diesel. Its popularity was never that of the 2 stroke. Parts and support is much more limited than the 2 stroke models. My opinion, it’s time to avoid out of...

Do new boat builders get off too easy?

You have never bought a new house. If you had you would realize that builders are even worse. The real difference is that Nordhavn took care of the issues. New home builders rarely fix their mistakes.

Cannot find a operating manual to fix a problem

Generator has a stator and a rotor for AC current. The Alternator and regulator is DC with the sole purpose of recharging the generators battery. I am unable to tell if you tested the wrong part or if you are using the wrong terminology. Since you didn’t test at the transfer switch I am...

    Survey finding(s) & renegotiation

I would find the local Volvo service center and get a quote for replacing a leaky #6 injector. I would then request a reduction in price to the quote. The seller will probably accept as it will be the easiest fastest way to close. You will be happier controlling the repair rather than...

    Starlink Mini

Let’s get back on track. I think the mini is a great option. I am only hesitant to recommend it on bigger boats until its WiFi penetration is proven. I am not suggesting that it isn’t worth the gamble on bigger boats and it certainly is a better option on smaller boats. Power consumption is...

    ROI/Sweat Equity v. Reality

There are so many answers to this question and it all depends. Did you buy during Covid when prices were stupid high and now you are selling with prices back to normal? Did you take 5 years to do the work and forgot to calculate that the boat is 5 years older and possibly older than the...

Cannot find a operating manual to fix a problem

I don’t know? Maybe a continuity test? Sounds a hell of a lot easier than following wires. Would also let you know if there was a circuit breaker issue in the wire.

Cannot find a operating manual to fix a problem

We likely have only 3 scenarios here. The Generator is no longer producing power. The transfer switch has failed. There is a tripped circuit breaker. At this point the two easiest to rule out are the transfer switch and the generator. A multimeter can rule out both items quickly. Start the...
