I'm Losing My Desire for Boating....

Sorry to hear about his passing. I read the whole thread. My thoughts and prayers to all who knew him. [emoji120] Invested now……what happened to his beloved boat SeaHorse? Did someone from here end up with it?

Yeah, I don’t think 36 is where I want to be for my first boat. I was thinking 26-27 or so . Something I can sleep on and take away for weekends that doesn’t break the bank in gas. Something similar to the Tolleycraft 26 , and I am still trying to find other pocket trawlers I might like.

Definitely prefer smaller. I don’t see myself on anything bigger than 36, heck, I love the layout of the Tolleycraft 26… Currently the wife and I have a 22’ rv and spend summer weekends there. Plenty of room for me and a boat would have more space than that.

That’s my biggest concern. I would think a smaller boat would be a better chance to get insurance , hence my 32’ft comment. I don’t need a lot of space in a boat.

Hoping for some advice and suggestions.. 1. If you are new to boating, and looking at getting your first trawler, at what length would I need to generally keep it under to get insurance? Can someone with no experience start at 32ft ? Or would they usually want to see something smaller to...

    Boat information website

Thanks for the suggestions. Powerboat guide looks to be exactly what I am looking for. Was hoping for a website that did the same thing, but I will just order the digital copy. Thanks everyone

    Boat information website

Can someone recommend a good website for researching different boats? I would like a one stop shop so to speak to see different models and which ones offer specific things. Diesel vs gas for example, draft, ect… Does such a website exist?

Haven’t bought anything yet. Trying to gauge if I can even pull it off with my skill set, but I think it would be a fun project . Was hoping to watch a bunch of stuff and see if it’s something I could do and would still want to do

Can someone recommend a few You Tube sites that are good for boat restoration? I am thinking of doing one as a project and want to know what I am really getting myself into. Also, is there a good boatyard near Toronto that lets you work on your own boat? Thanks [emoji120]

Thanks Jeff. Some great advice here. And yeah, while the great loop is the dream, I will definitely be exploring the Great Lakes as a warm up before attempting it. Plan now is about 4-5 years in our RV and let the prices return to “normal” and then buy a starter boat to learn on and do some...

Great information here Bacchus. I appreciate very much the thoughtful and well written advice here. I will look into all of it as we go along this journey. The wife and I are excited about the future and are definitely in this together.

Thanks Bill. Some great advice here. I don’t doubt that the maintenance costs are far more than RV and I have been looking into them for a while already as this dream has been in my head for a bit. I am also fully aware of the training involved and I plan to get as much time on a boat as I...

Yeah, it’s not a huge concern for me. Main focus will be making sure I can safely do the journey.

Thanks. I am thinking 36 looks to be a sweet spot for me when I am looking at them online.

Yeah, I have looked into it a lot as when I got the RV this summer we had gone back and forth about it vs a boat at that time. In the end we were given a very nice RV from a family member so it won out for now. Marina costs were close to what we pay for our seasonal site, but certainly less...

Thanks Jeff. It’s a good point. Planning on selling our RV in 5 years and will most likely begin boat ownership at that point. Hoping the bubble has Burst with the covid price increase by then and will certainly look into insurance along the way.

Not sold on a GB, just like the layout and size when looking at them. I don’t want a boat that has a lot of teak. Don’t have time or patience for that.

Let’s say I buy a boat for 10k and give it away 2 years later and spend another 10k maintenance costs. That’s 2 weeks of charters vs 2 years of owning. Maybe I am missing something, but my friend has a 27ft and hasn’t spent that much in 5 years.

Thanks! I think I am definitely leaning that direction. In the end, you don’t know till you try it.

Thanks. That seems a lot better for pricing and something we may consider when looking at a loop boat as the GB32 seems like it could be a good fit.
