Fuel usage: "new" vs "old" diesel engines

That seems really high for the Cummins. Maybe a gearing/pitch issue? I agree with the previous posts that efficiency spreads between older and newer diesels should be pretty minimal *all else equal*. It's also really hard to get all else equal in practice.

    Raymarine MDF necessary? Software headache.

I got a small Axiom+ for $420 or so without charts. Could you use a redundant MDF somewhere on board? I agree it's probably best just to bite the bullet - that's where I ended up after getting my Raymarine AP. It's also really nicely integrated. Great to be able to set the course on the...

    painting over varnish?

We did that this season, so still too early to tell, but many seemed to have had good luck with the method. Advantage over taking it down to bare teak, besides less work, is that if someone else wants to go back to varnish it's easier. Or at least that's what I was told...

    Starlink

I think he did that engineering to mount it to the top of his car; I think the standard terminal could just be mounted to the rail of a boat without modification.

    Starlink

Amazing. Deposit (refundable) placed. My service address is at capacity so no delivery until 2023, but this is looking more and more like a viable option for high speed internet while coastal cruising in the US.

    Interesting boats

I completely agree. At a certain point it's no longer boating, it's project management. Then after that, when you're paying crew & your captain's doing the project management it's being a CEO of an extremely unprofitable company. I don't want to do either of those things in my spare time or...

Ford Lehman 120 Stainless Steel Exhaust Elbow

Damnit... no brainer to go with the SS.

Ford Lehman 120 Stainless Steel Exhaust Elbow

Cool! Would love to know how much it costs vs the standard FL120 elbow. Just replaced mine though, so I'm good for a bit. Would have probably used these if reasonable.

Me too! But not at that price.

    Stopping disaster boat porn

I agree - some of the most impactful lessons we learned in undergrad engineering classes were studies of failure. Most of the coastal boat disaster porn is comically bad piloting (versus the offshore stuff where it can be terrible luck or much more ephemeral errors like weather routing or boat...

Ford Lehman 120 oil filter housing - need part

I just throw a pig mat underneath. It's a crappy solution, but not worth re-doing. On the starboard engine, access is much worse, with only about 12" between the engine & fuel tank. In that case I appreciate being able to get at the filter from above.

Ford Lehman 120 oil filter housing - need part

Thanks all. Brian at American Diesel has it in stock (810-0312) for $98. Big beefy casting. I'm going to go ahead and get it since it'll ensure I don't need any new brackets, fittings, or lines.

Ford Lehman 120 oil filter housing - need part

Hah - if you look at the oil cooler in the pic I posted it's got a JB Weld repair on it that got me back home from Catalina last summer after some encouragement from the TF brain trust. Not desperate this time thankfully!

Ford Lehman 120 oil filter housing - need part

Yeah I need the same fittings & mounting bracket, as well as filter size. Same hose orientation would be helpful too Most of the stuff I see is pretty different (filter mounts under housing, etc.) I'll keep poking around.

Ford Lehman 120 oil filter housing - need part

Thanks. It's late over there so I just sent an e-mail. I've had pretty good luck with that method in the past actually, but I might give him a call tomorrow if I don't get a response.

Ford Lehman 120 oil filter housing - need part

Replacing all my oil & tranny heat exchangers and hoses, I seem to have over-tightened the NPT fitting that screws into the bottom of the spin-on oil filter base, cracking the casting & creating an oil leak. The part is shown on the left of the pic (before the new parts). Anyone know where I...

Are Cell Boosters worth the install/price?

Thanks - please do keep us posted on your progress in getting it set up. I was looking at a similar configuration as an upgrade to my current simple booster system, probably only 4G though.

Yeah, it's a yacht for someone who wishes they were a Russian oligarch.

    Has The Market Peaked?

It makes me happy to think of a bankrupted Russian oligarch desperately bidding on my '79 CHB 41 to replace their seized 400 footer. My hope is that these superyacht builders deploy their personnel to build boats that might actually be used by someone who could make a living doing something...

    Suggestions for draining coolant

My Lehmans have a 1/4 npt drain port on the port side. It's been a mess every time, so trying something new: I just ordered a couple of these brass drain valves. Gonna get some flex tubing and drain it into a 5gal bucket in the bilge (I have a pretty deep bilge). Will let you know how it...

I'm jelly, that sounds amazing. How's your master suite arranged? I can't quite tell from the pics whether the berth is a walk around.

Longterm Cruisers: What do you spend???

I for one am happy to see other people's numbers; I think it's a service to the community. It's like asking, "how much does a boat cost": The "correct" answer is "it depends". The useful answer is "it depends, but my 40 footer cost $100k a few years ago, etc. etc. etc."
  24. socalrider

    Interesting boats

The 47 seems like a custom project for a very quirky owner. $700k is a lot, but the owner must have spent a multiple on that & has barely used it so probably anchoring on their build cost. I don't get the "mast" at all, nor the pilothouse layout. Agree that 55 is a much better deal at 2/3 the...

    Bug out Boat

I think Dago is right at the top of the list for Russian nuke targets tho! Let's sign a mutual non-aggression pact & I'll head over & live on your boat on jack stands if our town goes first & vise versa :) I will admit to having that immoral thought when walking past a really well-kept Island...
