Newbie-need info on Lien Hwa boat

Flee!!! There are lots of boats of that sort for sale which have been well maintained. They will be more expensive to buy but vastly less expensive to own, even if you value your labor at $0.00/hr. Check the classifieds here - there are some really nice examples for $20-50k as I recall. As...

I heard it was all paid in crypto.

    Comodave update 2

Well that, and a lucrative pay and benefits package. Right? Seriously though, thanks to the mods - it is a valuable service indeed.

    Trinka 10 Tender

We loved ours - sails very well indeed. Great little tender, if a bit heavy. We had to move to a RIB because my kids got too big & we got too many dogs.

    Starlink

The biggest challenge now for me remote working on the boat is synchronous video - zoom/teams calls. Starlink with cellular failover seems like the best solution for that, which is what I plan to do for next summer.

    Starlink

Yeah I know - my point isn't that it's impossible to get by on less than 1TB/mo, it's that doing so may require active management. If the marginal cost of bandwidth is zero, as it is for my home AT&T fiber optic, there's no need to think about any of this & usage skyrockets. With six users...

    Starlink

Yeah we're easily over that. We have no cable so everything is streamed. UHD TV can use 7GB/hr so it can go fast. We don't watch much TV by US standards either (though grandma downstairs probably does, and she uses our account). Just streaming football over the weekend could burn up 300-400GB/mo.

Nordhavn vs Fleming vs Kady Krogen

The above is also the case if you by 'exactly the right size' boat

    Comodave update 2

Good to have you back! I've never tried being a moderator; doubt I have the constitution for it. Very glad you've decided to return - those of us with less experience very much appreciate it.

    Rate today's boat market?

The key to long term success in many of the trades seems to be to get a business started on your own back, then hire a good crew and focus on mgmt and QC before your own body starts to give out. I've seen a lot of folks who are really beaten down by the work by the time they're in their late 50's.

    Rate today's boat market?

Yeah I agree with this. One exception to this is the military - they do a great job of training. Here in San Diego we benefit from a steady supply of skilled vets who are highly valued in the local job market. As an engineer I had the pleasure of working with graduates of Admiral Rickover's...

    Rate today's boat market?

But that's my point - you're only eligible for unemployment if you were previously employed AND got laid off for reasons that weren't your fault. It only lasts 26 weeks & pays a fraction of your wage - I just don't see this as a viable way to support a life of shirking. I know some abuse...

    Rate today's boat market?

Can somebody point me toward the lucrative government program that allows me to stop working and live on a boat? I honestly don't know what you guys are referring to. Unemployment only kicks in if you are laid off, pays a small fraction of your historical salary, and lasts for 26 weeks. This...

    Starlink

Looks like 2x the power consumption, which isn't great. But it is designed for the application. I'd probably lean toward using the older cheaper dish & replacing every few years if corrosion is a problem - the tech will probably get better anyway, and no real need to have it work while underway.

    Hello....my BIG assumption...

Yeah that's what I've been thinking as well. Many have circumnavigated on ~30' sailboats with very simple systems. There's no real analog for that with power, on the cost or comfort scale, but I think that's what most are thinking when they say "sail is cheaper". Not really apples to apples...

    GPH ford lehman 225

Thanks for the data point! I suspect if you brought your speed down 11% to 8kts you'd probably be at 2gph/engine (33% less burn) fwiw. Don't know your waterline length, but 9kts is probably a bit faster than optimal - for fuel efficiency, of course. Time efficiency is another matter entirely :)

    Hello....my BIG assumption...

That's a sobering post, Hippocampus. I remember talking with a cruiser while I had my First 405 sloop about how fast everything degrades in the tropics. My 40' sloop was pretty easy to keep going in San Diego with our light winds & moderate conditions - he confirmed that he was constantly...

    Rate today's boat market?

Nobody knows of course, but as backinblue noted, rates are going up by design to cool off an overheated market. I was much more nervous that we'd get a recession when rates were already effectively at zero, leaving the Fed with fewer tools. If the economy shows signs of slowing faster than...

    Rate today's boat market?

Non-scientifically it does not seem to me that there's a flood of boats on the market at least within my personal search criteria. There seem to be very few good trawlers under $250k in the 50' range on the market on the West Coast at least. Most of the ones I see have been on the market for a...

    Time to sell the boat

My wife has repeatedly remarked on her gratitude that my human relationships do not echo my relationships with motorcycles, guitars, cars & boats which tend to be neither serial nor monogamous. Wait, do you mean Gisele is available? :)

    Interesting boats

Cool ship! I wonder how effective the sailing rig is at steadying her with no paravanes or stabilizers. Lists a 97hp Volvo engine, which seems like an interesting choice, and claims only a 2188 mile range at 7kts with 1094 gallons - I would have thought she'd do better than 2nmpg.

That's a great looking tender for a larger vessel - what's the weight?

Replacing an inflatable with something bigger?

I'm not sure a Whaler would provide these attributes over a (larger) RIB? What is the max load your Weaver davit system can handle? I think it'd be very nice to at least have the option to pull the dinghy out of the water, say if you went out for a day and the weather changed on you. Wife...

    Hello....my BIG assumption...

Very good posts. On engine & generator noise: agreed with Peter's posts - my 40' sailboat (Perkie 4108) was significantly noisier under power than my CHB41 (2x Lehman 120). I can fit so much PV on my bimini (700W) that there's no need for a generator for my use case - I really don't like...

    Hello....my BIG assumption...

This seems obvious, but important: do you and your wife love sailing? If you don't, or are ambivalent about it, then you probably shouldn't get a sailboat. Personally I'd want to go back to a sailboat if I were doing serious ocean passages, or if I was younger & childless & broke again, living...
