    New Build - Electric Powered

Thanks for starting this thread! Did you see this video on a Devlin cold molded electric catamaran up in the PNW? There's a paywall but you might get the one video for free. https://www.offcenterharbor.com/videos/solar-electric-catamaran-ultimate-low-maintenance-cruiser-electric-philosophy/...

    Trawler Rocking, Rolling and Stability

https://www.flopstopper.com/FlopStopper/Home.html These are the ones. It's very hard to quantify improvement unfortunately; this is SoCal, Channel Islands and Catalina - anchorages can be quite roll-y indeed. We did a season with nothing, then a season with those orange cones - four per...

    Interesting boats

The other technology to compare the bat wings to is rolling chocks, which were discussed in another thread at one point. If I had to guess, the important variable would be the surface area of the device (wing, fin, or chock) multiplied by the distance from the center of effort to the roll...

    Trawler Rocking, Rolling and Stability

Thanks for the recommendation. I'd been dithering for a while thinking I would try to rig something up myself but I just went ahead and ordered a pair of the Magma poles, which should work fine with my flop stoppers.

    Trawler Rocking, Rolling and Stability

Agreed! We use two flop stoppers at anchor off our midship cleats; they help a lot but I want to rig poles as well for next season. SoCal anchorages are often quite rolly and stopping the roll is a high priority. I spend a lot of time looking at how our boat (SD 41' trawler) moves in the...

    Trawler vs Keelboat for liveaboard

Love the Cal 46. Almost bought one but decided we needed 3 full cabins. That was the boat that put us on the path to trawlers.

    Trawler vs Keelboat for liveaboard

I think the real advantage for sailboats aside from the pleasure of sailing is that they scale down better than trawlers for long distances; you can get a 30-35' sailboat which will take you safely around the globe (slowly) for $30k. And at that size everything is pretty inexpensive. There's...

    Trawler vs Keelboat for liveaboard

Yes! Or if your space constrained something like a PT-11 nesting dinghy would be ideal - rows like a dream as well so if you're just a couple you can use as your only/primary tender as well. Vastly more enjoyable to sail than an overloaded liveaboard S/V. My retirement vision has me pooting...

    PANBO - LiFePO4’s benefits at a lead-acid price point

Wow - great to see. $250/kWh for the 12V 200Ah module. That's well into no-brainer territory if you're ready to replace a FLA bank.

electric fuel pumps for Lehman 120

Me too. I removed and blanked off the mechanical pumps. Two seasons and no issues at all. My pumps are between my primary and secondary filters.

What Are Your Favorite Foods For Longterm Storage?

We've had no issues using US eggs kept at room temp for several weeks (2-3 probably). I've heard of people coating eggs in vasoline to keep them fresh for months without refrigeration, but never tried it ourselves. Our secret no-refrigeration ingredient: a really good block of Pecorino...

48-volt house bank. Next Gen for boats?

Very good price but I'm not sure how those server rack batteries would hold up in a marine environment.

    Defender Industries has been aquired

Yes - SD Marine Exchange is my happy place. Lots of knowledgeable staff, good inventory. Not the cheapest but I can dinghy from my boat to the back of their store in about 3 minutes, which counts for a whole lot! They always give me the "discount" whatever that means, but I've not inquired...

    Aquaalarm exhaust temperature alarm

That sounds frightening! What caused the sensor failure? I'm surprised your EGT read high due to a cooling failure - would suspect that engine coolant temp would be the next thing to notify of a problem. I think of EGT as a tool for calibrating prop pitch (if you have a variable pitch prop)...

    Aquaalarm exhaust temperature alarm

Yup - you can test the sensor with a heat gun. I added them as well; much quicker to respond to an impeller failure/blockage than engine coolant temp - potential boat saver.

48-volt house bank. Next Gen for boats?

I've been thinking about this a lot as well. When I got my boat 4 years ago I ripped out the entire 120V system and the generator and re-wired as a 12V only single-bank boat - wiring was 1979 original with lots of "improvements" and not safe. I used FLA batteries and a fair bit of 4/0 and 2/0...

    Interesting boats

Ahh got it. Deck mounted engines -> weird stability, hence the need for two hulls I suppose.

    Interesting boats

That's a very large fiberglass hull. Something to do with the mine hunting? I'd have thought they'd build a vessel like that out of steel or Al. Did they build a mold and make multiple copies? I like: 2 cabins, 2 heads, 17 berths - not a typical cruising cat ratio!

    New project - Water System

Thanks! I just grabbed the Fastronix so I don't need to find the right lugs. I'll wire this in when I replace the pressure switch next time I'm out on the boat. Love this forum. Sorry to the OP for the minor thread hijack!

    New project - Water System

Do they work with 12V? I'd think they would be 120AC.

    New project - Water System

I hadn't thought of either of those solutions - thanks. A relay seems like a decent idea and simple to implement - any recommendations? Looks like lots of automotive 12V/20a relays are available for $12 or so on Amazon, but no cycle life specs. Any ideas for a high cycle life unit?

    New project - Water System

Thanks for the rec. My trawler came with a Shurflo, which supposedly doesn't need an accumulator. PO had a tiny one plumbed in anyway. The pressure sensing switch at the bottom of the unit failed after 1.5 seasons - luckily I'd been nervous enough to buy a replacement unit. It's now failed...

    Interesting boats

Yeah it looks to be a very attractive boat at a fair price. I hadn't made the connection to the TF member but looking back at his long thread it looks like the owner is on to other good things in life. Somebody grab that boat!!!
