Also, be sure that there is not too much fluid in the unit. On my Hydrive unit, the instructions say to only fill to the shaft level otherwise it WILL leak past the seals. Just the same, my upper helm leaks even if filled to the proper level in roughish seas when there is a whole lot of helm...

Can't help with the OP's original questions but we did that trip (including going up the Snake in jet boats) several years ago on a Lindblad Expedition ship. Definitely an interesting trip to do.

Didn't the OP say "rubber impeller"? And if not rubber but Neoprene, is there a reason one should one not use grease?

I use a little Loctite Blue on the the zinc threads and change the zincs annually. No problems with stray zincs.
