Teak Top Rails - To Cetol or Not Cetol

We are in the Florida Keys. The oil we used is Amazon Golden Teak Oil. There was some on the boat when I got it. I used it and then bought some more. It looks great when first applied but then gets dirty and black as time goes on. The black looks like mold of some kind. It is the same black you...

Teak Top Rails - To Cetol or Not Cetol

I tried that for awhile. The first two weeks looks beautiful and then starts going down hill. After two months it is dirty and black and you start all over again. I got tired of it after about three cycles and went the 7 coats of Cetol route and haven't looked back.

Scraping and a heat gun work wonders. Almost like magic but not quite.

I just noticed you are it Texas. They have noseeums in Texas?? I thought everything was BIG in Texas.

    New sun shade

We were very plesantly surprised by the general lack of mosquitos and no seeums in Boot Key. We stayed at a marina up in Tavernier for about 9 months and at times they were unbearable. We have been in Boot Key for about 21 months now save trips to Key West and Key Largo and rarely are bothered...

    New sun shade

Well I don't tan I burn, and we live in south Florida on a mooring and only use the A/C at night to sleep. The shade keeps the boat the same temp as outside even during the sunniest part of the day, which in the Keys during the summer is usually in the low to mid 90s. To hot for northen folk but...

Boat Maneuvering with Separate throttle and Shift

With Moorse true, but not with Kobelt controls. Hopcar can fix him right up.

Boat Maneuvering with Separate throttle and Shift

I agree with that. Wether he changes to a single lever or not the engine shut down needs to be changed regardless. It is dangerous.

Boat Maneuvering with Separate throttle and Shift

pukeanddie, in your original post you said you have had the boat 8 years. If you have not addapted to the dual lever by now you probably never will. Talk to hopcar and get a single lever control. We bought one from him that looks to be excellent quality but unfortunately I have not installed it...

Teak Top Rails - To Cetol or Not Cetol

Your original application was too thin. In 2012 I refinished our rails and used two coats of Natural and then five coats of clear. Every year I do a maintenance coat or clear and they look as good today as when they were first done. I find it amusing that so many people avoid teak like the...

Fresh water flush - separate tank

I think the biggist question is will it hold equally as well in fresh water as in salt water.

Fresh water flush - separate tank

Is it possible that if someone buys a new Fresh head they could use the old head for an anchor as long as they used all chain rode.

    Balancing house batteries

I have a hard time believing what he is saying. I would like to see a 100 amp load applied and each link tested with an amp meter. The links are too short to cause any measurable voltage drop if the cables are sized correctly and the connections are tight. I think this might be a case of one...

    Need a new cell phone

I just upgraded from a Samsung S3 to a Samsung Note 4 last night. I got it at Best Buy. They had a Samsung help desk their in the store. They transfered everything from my old phone to the new one. One thing I did not ask them to do was to set up my email. The gmail was easy but my work email...

    Sage advice needed

Another problem with this style of boat at anchor is climbing a 6' tall ladder to get on deck from the dingy. We have a double cabin and that is bad enough. Neither is a problem when you are young and spry, but the older you get the more of a problem it becomes. If the wife is not too keen right...

Late model trawler, cruising and operating expenses

Dubnuh, I don't know if your budget would work for a 52 footer or not. That is a lot of boat. I will leave that opinion to those with that size of vessel. I had heard a rule of thumb for sailboats back when I was a sailor that as a general rule when you lengthen the LOA by 25% you double the...

Fresh water flush - separate tank

Peggy, by your coment about about tapping a vacum breaker into the holding tank vent you obviously do not understand how the system is plumbed. lf the problem is the holding tank vent being hooked to the toilet pump is the fly in the ontment that could easily be changed to have its own through...

Fresh water flush - separate tank

The way that it is plumbed works just like the Raritan vacum breaker. Either you don't understand how I have it plumbed or I just have to respectfully disagree.

Fresh water flush - separate tank

From Head Mistress "3. When the boat's water pump is off, the fresh water system isn't pressurized, leaving bacteria from bowl--and from READYTOGO's holding tank vent line are free to migrate in any direction into your fresh water plumbing. (What were you THINKING??? Bacteria laden gasses from...

Fresh water flush - separate tank

I don't know about adding a tank, but the way I did it was: 1 Remove the hose that goes from the hand pump to the back of the toilet bowl. 2 Run a new hose from the hand pump to tie into the holding tank vent line. This allows the pump to operate. 3 Set the selector switch to empty and then...
