    Fuel Tank Vent Question

How do you check to see if they are clear? Every time you fuel up you should hear/ feel air coming out of the vent. If not, it’s plugged. The vents are almost always near the filling deck plate, but on the outside of the hull. To the OP, you don’t want them venting to the inside as they spew...

    Views from the helm

From Cape Kepple looking northwest into Cowichan Bay. Just after leaving Russell Island as posted above by another TF member. We must have been there at the same time.

    Restaurants

In the Canadian Gulf Islands we have a few. On Galiano Island there is Pilgrimme. I believe the pub bus from Montigue Harbour will drop you there and pick you up but better check first. Better check a month in advance for reservations too although right now their website says you currently don’t...

wiring another 12 amp draw through 15 amp receptacle

Back to your original question, which nobody has addressed yet, no. At least up to a few years ago according to the Canadian Electrical Code. It could have changed by now but it used to be required for the wires to be connected inside the box with a set of pigtails going to the receptical and...

I saw this at Pirates Cove this week. A nice example of a small trawler style with stabilizer poles and fish. Very interesting to me.

Cummins 6BT5.9 water pump cam bolt sheared off

Seeing the photos, my application is totally different. I pictured something else.

Cummins 6BT5.9 water pump cam bolt sheared off

Under torqued. Just snug with a wrench. To get the strength rated, the bolt has to be tightened to the torque value, less will allow it to break.

Nimble Vagabond Prop Cavitation Issue - Help please!

That flat bottom planing hull should move very nicely with a 50 horse outboard. It is hard to judge from those pictures but is the motor tilted all the way down to the operating position? The way it sits right now it appears it is at the wrong angle when the boat would be in the water. Because...

Cummins 6BT5.9 water pump cam bolt sheared off

I have had this happen several times on one of my trucks. In my case it threads into a blind hole on a bracket. It is fine thread so has to be a grade five or grade eight. Grade eight is much easier to find than a fine thread grade five. After way too many broken bolts I found that a grade eight...

    Propane issue

You said it is horizontal? I think we are assuming that you have a propane tank that is designed to be used in a horizontal position, assuming you have the proper horizontally designed propane cylinder and the cylinder is oriented the right way up. The current version of propane tank valves...

    Passage through Canadian rapids

As already said, buy the book called “Local Knowledge” by Kevin Monahan. It addresses these areas explicitly. Much more very useful information as well.

    Interesting boats

The following text is from the seller’s advertisement. I have edited as this isn’t a sales pitch on this forum. I’ve put it here because it is an interesting boat. About a 1000 of these were built but only about 400 were the 28 foot model. …Honestly I would almost bet this is the only one...

What are the pink chickens on Navionics charts?

Depending on your chart plotter, hover the crosshairs over the item and “choose” the item. “Enter” button might be the control. Up pops an explanation of the item.

    Spare Prop

I recently asked a friend who has owned/operated a local prop shop for decades. He said a prop shop could add or subtract up to three inches of pitch. It depends on a few things to do with the prop too, of course. The prop I was asking about was under 20” diameter.

    Windlass only pulls floppy chain

I would recommend that you figure out how to operate the clutch. Generally the clutch is simply a cone that the wildcat tightens onto. Even if it doesn’t slip now and isn’t causing the current problem. You need to know how to use it. From what you have said, it sounds like you always power out...

    New cars; ho hum

New trucks are Ho hum too. Yup! I agree with the MGA as the nicest drive. Driver involvement required to milk the best out of it with the little 1600. Of course, it was considered powerful when it came out. Certainly cornered nicely. My current, almost daily driver, which was my midlife crisis...

Is this a safety issue - or just cosmetic? (w/pics)

Bottom paint is there as a protective coating to reduce marine growth, both flora and fauna. Barnacles, muscles, anemones, slime, wood worms, and seaweeds. Bottom paint sloughs off and wears off and toxins in it deplete. It gets reapplied annually, or every two to three years. Normally previous...
