Multiple Refers vs Full Size Refer

We have a full-size Bosch fridge and a top loading chest freezer. This will keep the two of us fed for up to 6 weeks in the Bahamas with the occasional stop to buy salad and vegetables. We have an all electric galley and run a generator 3 to 5 hours a day to cook, launder and make water. That...

    Paint dinghy bottom?

I just painted my RIB this winter after it became heavily encrusted. I used ablative paint and painted the tubes and the fiberglass bottom using the waterline as a guide. I hauled it today after over a month in the water here in Marathon and the bottom was clean! The paint flaked off of the...

53ft, 2 Hands, No Thruster - Crazy or EZ?

Today I had to hoist our tender out of the water while being blown against the dock by the wind. I needed to fit the tender between the dock and the side of the boat. I just loosened the stern line and had the Admiral use the stern thruster to move the stern away from the dock and hold it there...

53ft, 2 Hands, No Thruster - Crazy or EZ?

Thrusters are another tool in the box, like having twins and using differential thrust. Anything that makes boating easier and safer is to be embraced, not disparaged.

    Bromine tablets in sea strainers?

As long as there is no plastic in the system chlorine is ok. But bromine will not harm plastic if there is any there. Better safe than sorry later.....

    An often overlooked anniversary

April 9th is a glorious anniversary: the day Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, Commanding General of the US Army, received the surrender of Robert E. Lee, a renegade US Army Colonel who was a leader of a violent rebellion against the United States, which killed hundreds of thousands of Americans. Grant...

    He crashed my boat

I hear that! The boat owner is trying to weasel out of his responsibility to provide a fully functioning vessel to the delivery captain. If the thruster was known to be faulty, the captain should have been told. If the maintenance of the boat was so poor that it caused the thruster to fail that...

    Sticky Chain

If, as you said in your first post, you bought your chain from a reputable vendor, they will replace it if they sent the wrong chain. That’s going to be cheaper for you than buying a new gypsy to match a chain you did not order. Get a caliper or micrometer and carefully measure your new...

    Ok to pressure wash fiberglass?

I hope not since the guy on the other side of the canal pressure washes his rental center consoles for 1/2 hour every day that we’ve been here. BTW, they still look like new.

    Sticky Chain

The fit between chain and gypsy is critical. I had my gypsy rechromed and the plater put it on a bit thick, so while the first 100’ of chain with worn galvanizing worked OK, the following 150’ or so did not. The chain kept sticking to the gypsy and wouldn’t release to drop down the hawsepipe...

Jacksonville FL marina recommendation for trucked-in boat

Think you know Grand Banks ? What about the Chantyman ?

You can add me to the list. Proportions are all wrong to me. Truly in the eye of the beholder...... I am guessing that the wings behind the pilothouse are there as a band-aid to offset the too-tall pilothouse and keep it from looking like a phone booth.

New boat does not have dinghy.

So go to the tender store with a tape measure. Also be sure to buy a set of chocks that are made for your tender. What’s your budget? $15k? $20k?

    He crashed my boat

It’s your boat, your thruster and your employee. Who do you think is responsible? Hint: it was faulty equipment on your boat that caused the accident...... Who pays your deductible is determined by the fine print in the contract you signed with the delivery captain. It’s probably you though.

New boat does not have dinghy.

Then you should start a new thread about that and not stomp on someone else’s.

New boat does not have dinghy.

What is the beam of your boat? That will determine the maximum overall length of your tender since most of us don’t want the tender or lower unit to hang off the side of our boats. The bigger the tender and motor the better, if you want to take two couples on sightseeing trips or to distant...

    Southport Marina Sham

This such BS! It’s like saying that the stadium would not have collapsed if the patrons with tickets did not come to the big game. That if the drivers were not on the bridge with their heavy cars it wouldn’t have fallen down. Utterly absurd.

Can the Cruise Industry survive ?

There is a story in the NYT about the voters of Key West being overruled by the Florida legislature when the voted to ban cruise ships. It’s almost funny how “the best government is that closest to the people” gets tossed out when the big money gets annoyed. I’ve been to lower Duval, the...

March diesel price on the Gulf coast

This only works if you have a tiny fuel tank. I hold 1075 gallons, at 30 gallons a trip that’s 30 or more trips! Besides I had 600 gallons @ $2.49 delivered to the boat by a fuel truck a week ago. All the northbound boats in the marina got together and emptied a 3000 gallon truck. This is in...

zinc chromate follow up almost 2 years

Not denying your experience, but I’ve seen lots of people who worked with pressure treated lumber take a break and eat doughnuts or their lunch without washing their hands. Do that for a year and you will have ingested a substantial amount of chemical.

Giant Cargo Ship Jams Suez Canal

There are two livestock carriers stuck in the queue, I wonder how long the food will last or the water! They will start dying a day or two after the water runs out unless they can make their own. If they are stuck at the south I doubt there is any port within a reasonable distance that can...
