    Starlink Mini

I have pretty much decided not to take the mini offer. The main reason is it would force me to replace the cable in my current boat and RV installation. On the boat since I already have the ethernet adapter, I will have to run a new power cable and new ethernet cable to the mast where the mini...

    AIS Fishing Bouys

Crossing Sumner St this morning near Pt Baker I saw an AIS from a fishing vessel and a second vessel target labelled " Buoy 2". I thought fishing buoys marking nets or longlines were not allowed under FCC rules. A Google search didn't find any indication of fishing buoys being permitted on AIS...

    Starlink files for patent.

Ready, That size makes more sense in Ku band. It’s an incremental reduction in size and performance. To some extent flat panel satellite antennas are like solar panels, the bigger they are the better they perform. Tom

    Starlink files for patent.

This might be for accessing the T-Mobile direct to cell service that will be available the end of this year. Elon has some smart engineers but getting sufficient Ku band signal from the ground to a LEO satellite is a pretty big reach from a handheld device. Tom

    Solar Panel Sourcing

What’s the issue with 4x100w panels? Installation and shipping made the 4x100 the best choice. I was shipping them on a pallet to Wrangell so free freight wasn’t in the cards. Tom

    Old Transducer, new Garmins

Headed to Texas, I picked the Garmin Livescope transducer mainly for fishing. Its range in saltwater is about 20% less than freshwater, but I can see baitfish 100 ft in front of the transducer and rockfish about 80 ft in front that are 60-80 ft deep. To optimize it, I have to manually work...

    Victron Cerbo External Alarm

Heysteve, Thanks. I hadn't looked at it in a few years but finally got tired of not hearing alarms. Need to find my stash of Victron connectors and find a buzzer. Tom

    Victron Cerbo External Alarm

Victron has a very poor setup on the audio alarm on the Cerbo where the volume is so low it can't be heard unless the Cerbo is in plain sight and you are very close to it. I really would like an external audio alarm to warn me when AC power from the generator or shore power has been switched...

    Starlink experience to consider

I am reasonably sure the motorized antenna has accelerometers in it and the other models possibly. If they were worried about boats using the system while in motion they would not base it on location. If they are down on boats across the board using the regional mobile plans, the precision of...

    Accuracy of autopilot

I think there may be some confusion between the function of the compass versus GPS in sending data to the autopilot. The GPS COG is not as accurate as a compass in the heading data needed by an autopilot. You can run an autopilot with COG but at slow speeds the autopilot will wander as the COG...

    Accuracy of autopilot

I don’t see any departure in the course line and route in most conditions. In the Raymarine EVO system you can pick different levels of performance. I run on the lowest level most of the time to minimize the amount of cycling of the pump. Tom

New leak between twin disc bell housing and JD Engine block - how worried should I be!?

I am just across from you in Hoonah. I can discuss some options in SE. Depending on space you might be able to pull the transmission without hauling the boat, have the seal replaced and back in the same day. Tom

    Sonar Image

I froze the image and estimated the whale was around 42 ft long, the same as the boat. The show the whales put on that day was a once in a lifetime scene. It went on all day and night and into the next day. Between 4 and 5 whales were feeding on salmon smolt probably released by the Hidden...

    Sonar Image

Garmin 943XSV with LVS32THS. That is a thru hull transducer that comes with the GLS10 sonar module. Bought it for fishing never expected to see a whale. Works well for exploring thin water and anchoring.

    Series or Parallel Solar Panels

I just installed 4 100W panels on the pilot house roof. They are located on either side of radar scanner pedestal. Currently they each side of 2 panels are connected in series and the each pair is paralleled to connect to the controller. At any given time one of the two panels next to the...

Lifepo4 house / lead starting bank interaction?

I have looked at the Sterling Power DC-DC chargers and one nice feature is reverse charging. Placed between the start and house banks it will charge the start bank when the charge source is on the house bank and the start voltage is less than 13v. They are pricey but capable.

Dedicated autopilot control or operate with MFD?

The one feature of my AP I love and hate at the same time is my wireless remote. I love it because I can be anywhere in the pilot house and control the AP. I hate it because Raymarine has not updated it in more than 20 years. It still uses SeaTalk, sometimes loses connection, sometimes can’t...

    AIS Broadcasts

I don’t know how it will be rendered on the screen. It may show up as a curved line when you are zoomed in or not even appear until you zoom out. If the USCG can do that with an AIS broadcast they could do a lot of other things. I don’t know if a broadcast like that would be persistent on a...

    AIS Broadcasts

I was going over that latest USCG notices to mariners in District 17 (Alaska), and noticed a note about AIS broadcasts of USCG VHF radio outages limiting coverage in some areas. The note says you will see on properly equipped chartplotters a 40NM ring around VHF radio sites that have problems...

    Starlink Gen 3 Mounting options

Look at using the standard Starlink pivot mount. It should fit on the platform using only 2 bolts.

Slow Hand – End of the line

Ted, I think of you every time I walk by a Cherubini on the same float as our boat in Wrangell. We almost bought one 10 years ago before we bought the Nordic Tug. Good luck. Tom

Forward looking transducer? Do they work?

I am putting in a Garmin Livescope transducer this spring mainly for fishing. The demos I have seen are impressive, at least in freshwater, where you can see fish swimming and with a resolution that you can easily identify a school bus on the bottom. This particular transducer has a 20 degree...

    Engine room fire extinguishing requirements

Bacchus, That’s been my understanding. I have an engine room system that hasn’t been inspected in more than 10 years and where my boat is, there is no easy way to inspect it. A couple years ago, I ran into an individual inspecting the harbor’s fire extinguishers who had flown in from Juneau...
