Transfer MMSi

We just sold our trawler and wish to tranfer the MMSinumber with the boat to the new owner as our previous owner did for us.
Because both himand us took the boat international, he did it through the FCC verses through boatUS,
I've looke dat the FCC site, specificlly the section about tranfering the MMSi number and it's confusing..

"Maritime Mobile Service Identities - MMSI"

Has anyone done this? Do I actually need to write a letter to the FCC??

Yes, a letter to the FCC is required to cancel and receive permission for the buyer to take the MMSI.
I did it for the person who bought my boat. The process takes time though.
Be patient.
