Surveyor needed

Hi all. I’ve been member for few years but as I come from sailing background thought I would be smarter to read and listen rather than spouting my opinions! Just sold my first power boat a 1995 Tollycraft 44. Learned what I wanted for the long term from it and now hopefully going to buy long term boat. Looking for surveyor in around Los Angles area for a mid 40’s powerboat. Would appreciate suggestions for knowledge and thorough surveyor. Thanks

Good reputation, a bit expensive and was booked out quite far

Recommended by Bunker Hill due to scheduling. Up in Ventura so charged a few hundred for travel.

Recommended by Ross Hubbard due to scheduling. Good reputation, reasonable pricing and was able to fit me in on short notice. I was satisfied with his survey and knowledge, if you use him tell him Jacob Wisdom with the C&L recommended

You're welcome - no, for the engines I pulled oil samples following sea trial and sent them into Blackstone Laboratories for analysis.

To arrive at a decision I used those findings in conjunction with my own knowledge of engines, their behavior during sea trial, reading through the documentation/receipts for the boat as well as calling a previous owner to briefly discuss their experiences.

I used Ross on a boat in or near Oxnard I had surveyed, but ultimately didn't buy. He was extremely thorough, an excellent teacher when explaining things, and very balanced in how presented deficiencies vs age-vs-lifetime observations.

I was a brand new 1st time boat buyer at the time and, looking back, he stands out among the surveyors I used both for getting the survey right and in explaining with perspective right.

For an engine surveyor....that totally depends on what make of engine.

S&W Diesel in Wilmington, CA (Los Angeles area) is a John Deere marine dealer and rebuilder. I'd call them and see if one of their folks will do it or if they can recommend one of the independent people they work with. Their number is (310) 835-3155.

When I was in the area I used them for Perkins engines, in which they specialize as a legacy line, and I still use them for parts. Basically, they were historically a huge Perkins dealer, and are still a specialist in their classic engines, but now sell, rebuild, and service the John Deere and Yanmar lines.

When I was in town I sometimes used one of their mechanics, Chris, and sometimes an independent Perkins specialist that they recommended, Martin Ball.

I don't know if Chris does John Deer. I don't think Martin does.

But, at any rate, I'd call them and see if they'll do the inspection and, if not, if they'll recommend someone.

When you call, Angel, their parts person, will likely answer. He may be able to help, but if not, ask for Scott, the owner.
