New to trawlers. Why do some have a mast with a sail? Is this a motor sailor? Does the mast lower to do the loop? Specifically it is on an ad for a

Possibly a steadying sail...probably not a motor sailor...it may lower for the loop...suggest a lot of reading and research before shoving off.

If the boat your asking about is one in the link, the mast was not part of the original design. The picture though was taken from the original market pamphlet for the flush deck 44 and the mast is much shorter. I have seen similar masts that have been hinged so they can fold down to reduce air clearance.

That is a rather substantial mast. As big as a mizzen mast on a similar size ketch. If it was added by the owner, then I would want to know that a naval architect designed it for that boat. That mast will put substantial loads on the hull, and it needs to be designed like a sailboat mast.

It has stays so it is important where they are tied in. More importantly where does the foot of the mast rest? There needs to be support all the way to the keel.
