After reading on another post about the OpenCpn Navigation software; I decided I would try it out on a new Netbook I received today. Netbook is an Asus*Eee pc with a 10.5" screen, quite a dandy little unit, or so it seems...time will tell.

I**bought a gps receiver (Global Sat BU-353), downloaded software for it via the web, http://www.usglobalsat.com
downloaded the software*http://opencpn.org/download*, (free but contributions accepted),and used the help function to assist me in getting everything set up, including downloading the charts (free), and I am really impressed with how well it seems to work. I will be checking it out on a short cruise this weekend,* but it sure will be nice to have some redundancy in the Nav station.

I have an Eee PC Netbook as well. Have had it since 6/09 and it has performed absolutely flawlessly. They are great little computers. I have not yet used it as a navigation computer though. Let us know how it works.

So the software to run the navigation is free???? SO your only out of pocket expense was the GPS???(and the computer of course)???? Those little GPS's can be had for under 50 bucks!!!

Don't forget to donate...I have recently become a phone geek and the developers in that community work tirelessly for "free". Even if it is a few dollars....it helps!!!
