I'm another sailor growing old here in Santa Barbara who still wants to be on the water, and so I'm investigating powerboats in general and trawlers specifically. Trawlers seem to work well given our past experience .
Which is...keeping an Island Packet 350 on the east coast and cruising the IC as far north as Baltimore, across to Ft Meyers, down to the Keys and over to the Bahamas over a 3 year period. All the while living in California.
We really miss the travelling and the friendly cruiser community we met along the way and so hope to duplicate that great feeling and experience in a physically easier manner.
So I'm checking out the forums for information to guide us since top-heavy boats with big motors are a bit foreign to me. I need some lessons for sure.
Anyway we're a couple with no kids or dogs so it seems a trawler in the 34-36' range would work best, and having the great pleasure of working on boat systems before, I'm going with keep it simple, stupid. Single berth, single head, single engine, flybridge for viewing with a back porch for docking. So of course the dual cabin looks more attractive and useful. So Mainship 34, Monks, and Heritage East 36s seem the most appealing.
