Bass Strait, notorious for rough seas and dangerous conditions, lies between mainland Australia and the island State Tasmania.
The traditional surfboat was used by volunteer Surf Life Saver Clubs located at ocean surf beaches for rescues, patrols, and inter club races from offshore to the beach. Club members patrol and manage beaches on a daily basis in season to keep surfers safe. Largely ceremonial now, superseded by outboard powered fast inflatables,they were the pride of surf clubs up and down the coast and often sponsored or donated by local business interests.
This is the story of crossing Bass Strait in one. Probably could have been written in more exciting terms, but you get the idea:

The "Humour Foundation" they were raising money for supports "Clown Doctors" who visit sick kids in hospital and put on a bedside show to brighten their day. Some of the kids are very sick, hospitalised repeatedly, or in for long stays. A worthy charity.
