change steering wheel

I need to change the steering wheel on the upper helm station. The shaft is a 3/4" tapered shaft with a key. The steering wheel I am looking at fits on a 1" tapered shaft. Any ideas on how I can make them fit?

They make bushings for exactly that purpose, for example:

They also have them to convert between straight and tapered, etc

Nice solution! KDA are you getting rid of the rickety old pirate's wheel and replacing it with a nice modern stainless design???
