I need to bed deck hardware using screws. Most of the videos I'm watching are using butyl tape to bed bolts with backing plates, and caution against spinning the bolt to tighten a butyl bedded bolt; rather recommending tightening the nut. Is it good practice to bed screws using butyl, or are other sealants preferred for screws?

Thanks in advance for your input! -Ryan

I don’t usually use butyl on screws because you may not be able to generate enough clamping force to squeeze the butyl properly. I use Sika 291 for general caulking. Make sure to countersink the holes first.
